Flat Grind with a Serrated Edge

#1

Post by telemeister »

Hi Guys,

I am considering adding a full flat grind with the Spyderedge to my collection (probably a Caly 3). What are the major differences in how an FFG cuts with a SE versus grinds like the Sabre or the Hollow Grind? I currently own about 10 SEs, which are either Sabre or Hollow. Can anyone tell me about their experiences with an FFG in SE?

Cheers

I personally love em. I know others who think ffg should only be applied towards plain edge. If you use your knife for what it was designed for then you will not have any problems.

I also want to know the answer, I always wonder how a FG SE vs any other SE in terms of cutting power. We all know FFG PE is superior to hollow or saber grind in terms of slicing....

They work good, especially for something like bread slicing or food prep like cutting steaks. They also work quite better then hollow for cuting zip ties. I actually have a new caly 3 SE for sale because I have to unload one of the couple that I have after the new Sage Purchase!

I'm planning to purchase a SE blade solely for cutting zip ties, can you explain a little bit on how a FG SE works better than hollow SE with zip tie?

I would say that for something like zip-ties, there honestly wouldn't be any noticeable difference. FFG really shows its worth in situations where you'll be pushing the whole blade through the material (for instance: cutting cardboard). Zip-ties aren't even going to push past the serration scallops.

If anything would make a difference to zip-tie cutting, it would be width of the blade; so a 2mm Hollow-Grind would probably do even better than a 3mm Flat-Grind.

If Zip-ties are your main prey, I would greatly recommend an SE Cricket. :D

IMHO, Flat Grind + Serrated Edge makes a good combination. I have a Caly 3, ParaMilitary and a Tenacious that have this grind & edge configuration and they all work exceptionally well.

Its thinner and easier to get under and the combo of sharpness and SE makes it VERY easy to take them out.

:spyder: :spyder:  :spyder: :spyder: +1 for knowing the answer to this :) Very interesting :D If ffg is indicative of being ground on both sides, then I don't think it could be possible on SE; Am I wrong  :D
