A volunteer a steel for a really tough folder. Vascowear. Wear resistant, more shock resistant also than D2. Will rust though but you can engrave your name on steel girders with this stuff. The grinders won't like it but guys that work their knives like Yablanowitz will find this was created with them in mind. Joe

What makes these other knives tougher and more durable than the Delica 4? A thicker blade? What else?

I could recommend the Adventura as I have abused the crap outta mine over the last two years - cutting open tuna cans and coffee cans, using it as a screw driver, hammer, drywall cutter, pry bar, etc. But my level of abuse may not be your level of abuse. If you can give us an idea of the kind of tasks that will be asked of your new Spydie, we could probably come up with a more appropriate response than Manix, ATR, Chinook, etc. By the way, a SS handled D4 or E4 is a really, really tough and abusable knife too!
And I was thinking I'm the only one who abuses the Adventura...

Thats a good question. The easiest answer is to compare a folding knife to a fixed blade.

A fixed blade is tougher because of its "locking mechanism," which consists of a piece of metal as thick as the blade with no moving parts. Many would also say thickness makes the knife tougher. You can baton or pry or dig or twist with a thick knife more than you could with a thin knife. However, if you are not going to be doing that kind of stuff, you will quickly find the added weight a burden (at least, I did).

Just remember what a knife is meant to do. For its intended purpose, it does not need to be very sturdy or tough.

It was pretty much the only knife I carried for two years, until I just recently got more heavily into "accumulating" Spydies. I actually just sent it back to Spyderco for a factory edge again. I haven't carried it in a few months, but am looking forward to getting it back and EDC'ing it again.

Thanks Alex, for such an awesome design!! It is truly one tough, abuseable folder!

Sorry Billy I missed your post earlier. Basically my definition is cutting rope, heavy cardboard boxes, widdling sticks to a point for cooking hot dogs over a fire. So basically what I need is a thicker blade, a stronger lock on the blade and a bit more heavy duty handle. I hear those G10 handles are good any advice on those?

The G-10 handles are excellent. I have the Caly3 and the UKPK. Both are pocket razor blades with the G-10 handles. They have a solid feel to them and a very nice grip. They do seem to be a little more expensive though. Still, I will be adding more G-10 knives to my collection this year.

RTE, you can't go wrong with a G-10 handled knife. I think there are alot of forumites who will agree. As for a really tough knife that will fit your bill nicely (and can be had for under $100) check out the Para-Military. They are super tough little knives with heavy duty, G-10 handles and the bullet proof comp lock. The blade is also really strong as well as being a wicked slicer with the FFG blade. I think for your uses you could go with either the PE or SE and be very happy.

Have fun with your decision! :D

Your D4 can do all of that without issues. G10 will not make a knife any "tougher" or more "abusable" than what you have.
