Apparently you and I are the only two to think so :(

It saddens me that SE has fallen so much by the wayside on newer models.

The first change I voted for is SE blade as I already have the PE version. And would love this in SE

Count me on this to

The next step after that would be G-10 scales.

i voted for frn. g10 is great too. . . but i think one piece frn like natives and 3rd gen delicas would be great. with an all new color too- like a deep reddish orange and a new lava pattern too. forgive the typos and case here... this post comes from my razr keypad.

The main thing that would improve the Lava for EDC would be a handle material change. The weight of the Lava is one reason I don't carry mine more often. My preference would be for a darker color, either G10, Micarta, or FRN.

I would go for any of them. Ideally, whatever handle material is chosen it should also be relatively smooth, and not the 'cheese grater' texture of some G10. In my opinion, Micarta or FRN would be better, but G10 might be easier to justify production-wise.

Voted Micarta, but would definitely buy any of the others.

The Lava is a great knife as is, only possible changes should be materials used or adding a serrated version. Changing more than that would make it a different knife.

My vote, G10 scales...

Actually, anything besides SS would be fine with me.

better blade/handle length ratio
This is often said of the Para as well, but people fail to consider that the design of the knife basically precludes a longer blade--in other words, for the blade to be lengthened to any degree, the handle would need to be proportionately larger too.

If you want a bigger blade, get a bigger knife, but why change blade length solely to 'match' the handle?

Word up! The Lava is basically perfectly sized. A bigger Lava would make it a completely different knife. I think that the distinct characteristics of the Lava define what a "Lava" is. I think if you want to a different handle material just go and get it customized. I take back my earlier post, no white micarta, just beautiful stainless steel!

a custom lava is $220 (cost of knife and custom work) to start with, options such as a textured g10 is extra

I love the Lava and would pay more for lightweight scales but not that much.

But the Lava is a Lava is a Lava... :)

I have no idea what that means.

I would prefer almost anything else for the handle, including the unlinered Micarta that Sal said he won't do again. Like others, my big problem with the Lava as it exists is it just weighs too much for the amount of edge it gives you. Unlined FRN would be nice, but I suspect that the SS model is not selling well enough to warrant tooling up for FRN. Polished G-10 with skeletonized liners would be interesting as well, but I don't know that sales would make it feasible.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

I would vote for more options so;

I don't like steel handles that much they do not feel comfortable to me.

Either a frn handled one (prefably foliage green frn) linered like delica/endura4 .

Or a G10 or Micarta one.

Wharncliffie would be interesting but original bladestyle too.

If different handle material i would buy one (at least).

I voted G-10 scales as my one change to the Lava. Any color would be good, but a dark blue in keeping with Chad's LEO/CO background would be attractive and appropriate. The weight of the stainless handle is the main reason I don't have one now.

I would really like to see FRN, but I suspect that sales numbers would not justify the cost of cutting molds. Like many others, if Sal made them I would buy one; the problem is, I would buy one.

Well, the point of the exercise here is not so much to create the ideal Lava, but to find out what single modification would get the most response since, if we do get a variation, there's only likely to be one single change. It's true that certain modifications will cost more to design and impliment, but some might be as simple as (quite literally) cut and fasten.

well Jeff, i'm admittedly biased and I voted for unlined micarta coz that's what I commissioned STR to have done to my Lava, with one of his Ti lowrider clips ;)

Handle changes, while not necessarily cheap, can be done aftermarket; so that definitely would not be my first "if I could only" option.

I haven't seen any pics of someone converting a PE blade to SE (the other way, yes... poorly). :p

This coming from someone who bought a customized G10 dragonfly because they didn't offer it in that... so take with a grain of salt.

I just bought a new Lava but knew that I wasn't going to EDC it with the SS handle. It's just a great looking, beautifully built knife that I wanted in my collection. If any other handle material -- FRN, G10, or whatever, and I would buy another to possibly EDC. I hate putting a nice SS knife in my pocket with coins and such, as I have with some other SS Spydies. I can't stand to see the scratches.
