The search feature is your friend, but in case it doesn't quite work as desired, you can always check out Ted's site: http://www.spydie.nl, all specs of any -any- spydie ever produced. If the specs aren't listed you can always use his link to get any spydie in real life size on your screen. Or check out his collection of old catalogs: http://www.spydie.nl/catalogs/

Sharpening Stones

#162

Post by Mr Blonde »

I still have one more batch of pics to share. First up are these sharpening stones. Sal and Eric told us a bit about the production process. Now I know that when these stones get out of the furnace, they're hotter than lava and technically an 'ash'. They're also so durable, these stones should be around for a few millenia. When the pyramids have crumbled, these stones should still be around

The 3x5 Ultra Fine stone is intended for carpenter/woodworkers and knifeknuts of course.

Image

The Slip Stone is more specific to sharpening the blades of woodworkers. The curve has no stops or 'breaks' in it, it is perfectly rounded.

Image

The last stone of this meet, is one that I really want to pick up. It hasn't been named yet, but it's a ceramic version (ultra fine) of the Duckfoot sharpener. Sal is still looking for a suitable name for this stone. I would suggest something like 'pendulum', 'rosetta stone' or 'platypus stone' (they have duck-like feet right?).

Last item: the Baliyo!!!

#163

Post by Mr Blonde »

This last entry of my report, is the item I liked best at the show; the Baliyo. This one is really addictive! It's a pen, adult toy, kid's toy, balisong-substitute, skill toy you name it. Spyderco has had this one in 'secret development' for over 2 years. It takes a little getting used to, as the Baliyo is a bit lighter than your average balisong, but it does work. Pretty soon, some of the trick I learned in my early teens came back and I was flipping the Baliyo with Eric's approval. :D Eric is IMHO a true magician with a Baliyo or a Balisong for that matter. Anyways, the Baliyo is one of those items that could really take off and sell to many markets in many variations.

I wasn't familiar with the Fisher space pen cartridge and it writes very nice. The nib can be screwed out and in, to protect the pen's tip and use it for writing. Even my wife took a shine to the Baliyo, and she really doesn't like me playing with a bali. Mostly because that means I'll be whining for a band-aid within minutes. :D No such risks with the Baliyo.

That's all folks!

There were about a handful of concept models; fresh designs that the Spydercrew wants some input on, before deciding on production and the prototyping phase. I can't share pics of these models, and some are hard to describe only in words. There was a concept model shears in H1, a really cool tiny folder called Balance which when closed had the opening hole exactly in the middel, a huge Ed Schempp chopper for bladesports and an even bigger chopper for blade sports made by Gale Bradley (also a folder). The Keving Wilkins Leafstorm was there, but only in its concept stage (full custom). A nice Bob Terzuola concept folder that uses a ball bearing detent to keep the blade open.

I do have a few more pics, but that's more of the same models. Perhaps later this week I feel the urge to post some other pics of the same model to show a different angle or something, but that could also be next week. Thanks for checking this report out.

In my pics of the table, I noticed a little red tag with the Leafstorm indicating it to be a concept model; so no posting of pics is allowed.

I think it's actually smaller than the Spin, about the size of the D'Holder Toad...but different. :D

IIRC, The leafstorm is still the concept model made by Kevin which appears to be identical to this one on his website.

Thank you Mr Blonde for the excellent pics. This really made my weekend, looking at all those pics. A little disappointed that the one I was looking forward to the most (leafstorm) could not be imaged, but overall enjoyed it all.

I'm thinking about cleaning up my pics of last year's meet, since either the production version is out, or they were shown in this year's meet. So if you must have copies of last year's prototypes, get 'em here.

Wouter, Thanks so much for the awesome pictures and reports. Lots to look forward to in the near future. Thanks also to Sal and the rest of Spyderco for allowing Wouter to post the eye candy for those of us that cannot be there. I can feel a US Virgin Islands show in the near future  .

Wouter,
Thanks again for providing us with inside look at something available to only the privileged few
My absolute favorites are Schempp’s and Viele’s folders. Rookie and Orange Ladybug look very attractive also.
It is amazing that you were able to get such a great pictures without special setup.
Thank you for the show!

The BaliYo is just that, 'a strange pen'. It's a pen but you can flip it around and play with it like a balisong. It's sort of a toy, really. You can do every balisong trick with it, I think.

I'd really like to thank Sal, Gail, Eric, Ed and last but certainly not least Jurphaas for putting together such a wonderful meet and allowing me to share all these pictures with my fellow forumites! Me and my wife had a blast at the meet.
