U.S.Army standard field knife ?
To : ALL
Having served as an infantryman
( 11Bravo ) I found a sense of emptiness
that Uncle Sam never issued us a "field
knife" ( i.e. general utility ) as part of
our gear. I often wonder which Spydie
might have been "up to the task" ?
I still love my C 29BK "Cricket", but, the "bill" would require a much stronger
blade. Maybe a "Native" with O.D. Green or
Camo FRN handles. Any idea(s) ? Maybe

Hi ATE.
As you obviously have an interest in knives (it's a good indication that you know how to look after one), I would recommend the Military, a very good all rounder, very good grip on the handle and a **** good blade. The only possible down side is the tip is quite fine, no problem if you use it sensibly, but is possibly prone to missuse. In my experience the best way to break something is to give it to a squadie and tell him to be careful with it <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
The Native is a great all rounder and is a solid brute of a knife, one of my personal favorites.
My personal recommendation for a general issue knife would be the large Calypso. It's very light, scary sharp straight out the box, flat ground with a drop point so it is just as at home skinning game as it is cutting webbing.

I would think that it would be a fixed blade. Check out the knives at http://members.tripod.com/~Newt_Livesay/index2.html (no folders here).

Several branches of the military have members as well as assorted foriegn military, and Spec Ops groups carrying the Gunting as a Military knife..
Its being carried by several members of the UN peace keeping security forces..
Nothing on a grand or official scale..
It workd rather well..
As seen in this current issue of SWAT magazine..
Strider is working on a Military folder version of the Gunting that Helicopter and fighter pilots could use to cut or break their way out of damaged air-vehicles..
As Strider says it will cut through a tank..
We have designed a fixed Blade, the Lapu-Lapu with Rob Simonich, 5 and 7 inch blades Rob Newton & Frank Olesen fixed blade Guntings are called the Abanikos and are in 5 & 7 inch versions....
they can be seen in the new Excaliber, Caliber, Fire and Coltelli magazines from Europe..
We showed them to the various Military overseas @ the Milipol Show in Paris..
WE are also working on a Strider fixed blade as well..
Yes..all my designs..
or modifucations on my design..
I am off to teach the Gunting @ a few bases over the next few months,,
Several Marines I know are bringing it to Afghanistan..folder & fixed blade..
have a great day..
