Haha, yes, totally busted KaliGman, starting a Spyderco collection is beginning to become a slight addiction, but I am limiting myself to one Spyderco a month, but in this special situation I might get two (mini persian and delica (waved and non waved..well maybe a waved this month and a non waved for next month's Spydie purchase)). I don't have particularly large hands either so it looks like the mini-Persian would be comfortable size for a small punyo tool..

The waved feature does look interesting as well. Is there one Emerson waved folder that you'd recommend KaliGman?

KaliGman wrote:With a little technique and training, you can use the Delica and the small Persian for punyo (butt) strikes. As has been indicated, the grip is just enough for your four fingers, so you don't have a lot of spare punyo, but it can be done. Also, just as I have shown with the Lava, the front of a closed small knife can be used quite effectively.

As for the wave, it works well until it doesn't. What I mean by that is that it is a very quick way to deploy a blade on a folding knife, but that sometimes it will not wave all the way open under stress, or it will get caught on the lining of a pocket, etc. As long as you continue to practice alternative deployments for the "in case the wave fails" situations, waves can be very good--they give you another opening option. That said, in general I prefer my Spydercos non-waved and most of my Emersons waved. I find it a bit easier to bypass the wave at speed, should I need to pull the knife but not yet deploy it (a good idea in many a situation) with the Emerson wave. Besides, I practice deploying all of my knives from various grasps, with either hand, etc., and can pretty much open them no matter how I grab them.

It is probably good to have a Delica wave in the collection (you seem to have the start of a good addiction errr collection :D ), so I would pick one up. I would look into getting a mini Persian too. In fact, I think I have talked myself into buying another Persian, "just in case." :) The Endura, based on your criteria in the first post, would be a bit large: overall length of 8 3/4" when open, blade 3 3/4" (compared to your Chinook 3--overall length 8 9/16", blade 3 3/4") [all measurements from the current Spyderco catalog].

I have a Caly 3 and love it. Its falls in the 3 inches and under as requested and I love it. Its a little small for self defense but would work and I love the shape of the blade. I got a mini-Manix the other day and its a little over 3 inches but is a solid knife. A little larger than the Lil Temperance but close in size and about $100 cheaper. Might want to give it a look.

One of my favorites is the Emerson Persian (and it isn't waved and is a big folder). Just to be evil and start you off on another addiction, I would suggest the Combat Karambit folder (once you start buying karambits you will either succumb gracefully to the karambit bug as did Hannibal, or curse my name for draining your wallet even further :D ). A good general use Emerson is the Commander (for sheeple, it is as menacing as the Chinook though). The sheeple Emerson is the CQC-14 Snubbie (small blade, large handle).

As this is the Spyderco forum, we should probably take anything else on this off-topic or just shoot me a PM.

Shucks! The best I am seeing on ebay right now for the waved delica is $56+. I think I will be patient and wait until a better priced delica appears on the 'bay.

Like KaliGMan, I too prefer the regular Delica. The Waved Delica I have is a great tool, but as I tend to carry something all the time the wave does tend to snag and occasionally it'll pop out of my pants etc...

On deployment, if practiced lots and regularly the technique should be second nature. However, in times of stress, the fact that something CAN go wrong will mean that Murphy's Law will be adhered to. My philosophy is to subscribe to the School of KISS :D

I suggest carrying your Chinook for when the crap goes up, while keeping, say, the Lava for misc. cutting. Besides, who cares if the bad guy doesn't like the fact that the Chinook is NOT NKP-friendly? :D

Haha! True enough!!

Though I gotta say, I was playing with my Lava today and I feel like it might be the best knife I own or will own. It's just such a sweet little thing. I really think it's brilliant.

The only think about the Chinook in NYC is, if the crap did go down and I ended up using it in a sd situation, my great fear is that I would be the one in trouble for carrying a "gravity knife"..i can just inagine having to go to court and them whipping out the chinook to a jury of NKPs and then having to describe how I primarily use it to cut mundane things in the office and my painting studio. On the other hand, the Lava is an entirely different story...

I'm pretty confident if the stuff hit the fan the Lava would come in quite handy..a simply punyo strike to someone's chest or face would smart something fierce, even for a tough bad dude..
