Dis-satisfied spyderco owner!

Post by bilbo6209 »

I have owned 5 Spyderco knifes over the past several years, three of with have been Delica's. My second knife was the older style Delica with the molded plastic clip, I had no problems with this knife until after daily use and a motorcycle accident (doing about 60mph and laying down on a highway on the clip of my Spyderco), one day when I was working at a restaurant I caught the clip on a bread rack and snapped of the clip. I sent the knife in for repairs (they were very busy at the time and it took almost 2 months to get the knife back). While the knife was in getting fixed (they ground off the old clip and added a screw on clip, like the ones on the steel handled knifes) I bought a "new" Delica, this was the style before the current model (the knife looks almost the same as the current model except the retaining area for the clip didn’t have the built up area on the outside edge). After about 2 to 3 months of daily use the clip started working loose (the clip is held in place with a barrel bolt) at least one time a day. After a week or so of this the clip flexed the plastic out around the barrel bolt so that even with the barrel bolt screwed as tight as possible the clip still wiggles around. Around Thanksgiving I sent Spyderco an email asking for help trying to get the knife fixed/replaced. I still have not heard back from them.

Two weeks ago I was passing a knife store that had 40% all their knifes so, I bought a new Delica (this one was the new style with the built up area around the clip and barrel bolt). The clip was loose the next day and has worked itself loose everyday since. This clip has now flexed the retaining area out so that the clip wiggles by 1/4 to 1/2 inch too. I have sent Customer service an email and still have not heard back from them.

I have tried lock tight in the barrel bolt but they still work loose.

I am too the point of going out to buy a different brand of knife but I just bought the "new" Delica and don't want to go out and spend $50 plus on a new knife.

If any of you have any suggestions for getting a reply from customer support or any suggestions on repairing these knives I would love to hear them.

Thank you

Bill

Sorry but I needed to vent. I have worked in customer service off and on since I got out of high school and I cant stand it when I don’t get good service.

Bill,

First off, Welcome to the Spyderco Forum!

I'm sorry to hear about your problems. I've carried a FRN Endura for years and never had it loosen up. When you loctited the fastener was there any oil in the threads? This could cause the loctite to not adhere properly. What # loctite did you use? 242 is blue and that is for situations where you need to remove the fastener. That should work fine. 271 is red and that's permanent, you'll never get that loose! 261 is green and that is cylindrical loctite, should only be used on studs and bearings. Not recommended for fasteners.

I've never had to deal with Spyderco C/S but hear they are quite professional and courteous!

I hope this helps... I beleive Spyderco to be the best in the industry! Give em a second chance.

I locktited my older knife and dont remember what color I user (it was either red or blue). As far a giving them a second chance I think they are on the third now.

Yes, I did call and the guy on the phone her told me that he had never heard of this problem before (my question that or why would they have beefed up the "problem area&quot<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> but he didnt offer any corrective action except the fact that they reinforced the area around the clip on the new model.

The only Spydie that I have had any problem with is the FRN Native.Resently the barrel bolt came unscrewed and I lost the clip.I called Mike at WandR and I had a new clip with in a week. The only problem is that he sent the wrong barrel bolt,it is to short to go through the handle. There should be another on the way now.
BTW I used clear nail polish on my native ll after that happened,it will not loosen unless you loosen it and then it takes some doing.

The clip on my Endura fell off after only a couple of days, and the old style clips broke all the time, that's why they switched.
I have sent them several emails myself, and have not got one response back from them.
I still like their knives though.

Well I just got off the phone with Warrenty and repair they will relpace the knives for me, I just have to send them in and be with out my Delica for a couple weeks. Spyderco is well aware of the issue and suggests that you locktite the barrel bolt when you get the knife. They dont put locktite on the knives so that it is easier for a user to get the knife configured to their liking before things get locked. I will be giving Spyderco one more chance, I will locktite the knives as soon as I get them back, If I have the same problem again I will start to shop for a diffrent brand of knife in the future.

Bilbo6209,

I feel your pain. I own a custom Elishewitz Oracle & it's clip is thicker and looks more rigid than most Spydercos I've seen & it's bent from to much use on my belt. I have to send it back to Mr. Elishewitz. The only knife clip that hasn't bent on me is my BM folder. I still like Spydie's more. I believe they're better quality, although BM is still a fine knifemaker.

Spyderco created the clip concept and have developed many types over the years. It is one of the major questions always present in the R&D dept. We probably do more clip research than most. It seems most clips on the market are a variation of a proven Spyderco design, rather than research on their own.. That's ok. We still have to do our clip research. It is our obligation to our ELUs.

The wire clip on the new Salsa, we believe, will be the state of the art, at least for a while. It is less likely to scratch furniture. It has enough flex to avoid breaking or rotation. Enough spring tension to keep it in the pocket but still be easily accessible when needed. There is still refinement yet to do, but it offers many advantages over the older style of clips.

The Meerkat clip is also still being refined, although we've had no failures yet.

We are also working on several other syles of clips for the future.

The clip on the "Q" was our first experiment with a wire clip, but we also used the clip itelf in a "Wichard" style of bend to maintain tension. Positions included left/right and up/down. The clip proved to have many problems and is still back at the drawing board. I think it was too much development to try to incorporate at one time. Working with the different variations of wire clips will teach us more about the concept.

Hope that helps.

If you don't think Spydies have a good clip setup, pull up a chair and I'll read you a list of lame clips on various competitor's models. I've been retailing knives for about a decade now, and the only problem I have with Spyderco clips are the screws. I really, really, really, really, really, really wish they were Torx fasteners, because Torx heads are harder to distort than Phillips are, and I've jacked up the screws on just about all of my Spydies. Plus, if you don't have a set or two of Torx drivers in the tool box, what kinda man are ya? I think I collect 4 times as many tools as knives.

Its all fun and games til somebody loses an eye, then its fun and games you can't see.

Benchmade now has a nifty little kit called a "Blue Box" which contains a very useful set of Torx bits for about ten bucks. Mean time take it easy on those phillips heads heh?
