Opinion on the C58BM JD Smith

I have long thought that the JD Smith collaboration was a beauty, and now I fear that a new form of virus, (JDSmithism<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) is beginning to surface in my brain. Can you JD owners give a little background on this knife? I just might have to order one.....<img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

One of my favorites but not my EDC anymore. Although the blade and handle are nicely designed, I think Spyderco should have made this knife with with more thought on quality. The update with VG-10 is an improvement, however, other features should have been considered from the very beginning.

The beauty of this design deserves double ss liners and an adjustable pivot. Ti scales could also have been considered (similar construction to the Ti Lum tanto). The opening and closing action should be smoother than what it is now--how much more would decent bushings add to the cost of the knife? Constructed as such (with the Ti scales or micarta scales on dual ss liners) the JD Smith, imo, could be seen as a viable--and affordable--non-custom alternative to the CRK Sebenza. MBC capable? Maybe.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Spydie fan and have enjoyed the JD Smith as an EDC for quite awhile. However, my tastes have moved toward knives (for EDC duty) with slick action in addition to good design. (I open and close my EDC constantly for relaxation and therapy). <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I cannot honestly describe the JD Smith's action as "slick."

It seems that Spyderco's market is the moderate- to low-end priced knives and they are, for the most part, true to that strategy. I can respect that. However, I feel that it is a lost opportunity for Spyderco to deny this great design its full market potential. Sorry if this sounds like a rant but I really meant this as constructive criticism and wishful thinking to get a such a proto in my hand.

Is still a very good knife, even with the opening not being as smooth as it should be. I had a plain edge that was the sharpest knife I have ever owned.

I loved the knife, and thought it was a great addition, the vg-10 is nice, and black micarta looks really slick, I think they discontinued that already, or am I crazy?

As far as I know, the JD has been discontinued. (Bummer!<img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) But, a few places still offer them. I think JohnFJensen might have a couple laying around. ( I hope! )<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
