Vesuvius/First Impressions

Early this mourning the UPS man droped off our new Vesuvius. I purchased this knife through Bayou Lafourche Knife Works for the ridiculas low price of $59.99. So, after one day of use I have some very positive openions of this fine knife!

Ours is the plain edge model with blue shell inlay. This is to my eyes, the prettiest production tactical knife I've seen yet(blue is my fav. color)! The clip is reverseable from tip up to tip down position. Ours came out of the box in the tip down mode, which me and my Midnight Manager proptly made right, by switching to tip up. The egornomics of this knife are for my small/med. hands perfect, for that reason alone I have a hard time putting it down! The steel as you know, is my favorite ATS-34. The knife was fairly sharpe out of the box, but not quite as keen as our last couple of Spydercos(Calypso Jr., Delica). It shaved news paper, so that's fine for me. The drop point blade is another favorite of mine, this one is similar to the outstanding Wegner knives(C-48&49), with serrated thumb perch. When it comes to the DP blade style, I always go with plain edge, in case I have to use it on game.

This is my first experience with the excellant new compression lock. I did a spine wack test, which didn't even phase this powerful new lock system! The action is almost as smooth as our 7 year old mini-AFCK, and the smoothest I've felt yet on a Spyderco! The compression lock takes a little getting use to as for manipulating it. After a couple of hours I was use to it. It's just as user friendly as a liner or lock back, but enough different that my brain is going something is different here.

When I first layed eyes on this knife in Knives Illustrated several months ago, I thought it would be expensive. I would have no problem paying the retail price. The new Vesuvius is to me perfection in a folding lock knife. Not only is this knife my new favorite Spyderco, it has dethroned our AFCK as my all time favorite, after only one day. Thanks Sal and the rest, for this outstanding design! RKBA!

P.S. With this knife I'm trying a new lube called Miltech, it has been outstanding so for. My wife has retired her old Uncle Henry, and has inherited our blue Delica, for her EDC. I want miss sharpening that knife what so ever!

Thanks for the review, Alan. That knife has "caught my eye" for a while now. Your comments may have pushed me over the edge. I need one. Good luck with it.

Alan2112,
I just received a Vesuvius in trade, and am very happy with mine also. I made it one of my EDC's. I love the inlay. I wish Spyderco had made the whole handle that blue color. I believe they had a prototype like that at one of the Blade Shows. I think. Does anyone remeber those??
