For years, I had used a Sharpmaker to sharpen my knives. Then, I bought some Bark River knives that are convex ground. Since then I've been convexing all my blades with great success. I use several wood mounted leather straps and various grits of compound.
Would it be blasphemous to use this technique vs. the Sharpmaker? Do you guys just use the Sharpmaker on your Spydies exclusively?

I've had my ss 'fly done with a convex edge for about 5yrs now... doesn't shave but cuts anything (including fingers if you get em in the way :o )
Leave my strop hanging at the bottom of the stairs, usually hit it every few days of use. Considering that usually when a knife feels 'dull' is because the burr is bent/broken (if you left one at all to begin with).
I see nothing blasphemous with putting a good convex edge on a spydie.

Why do people worry more if you argue with your voices than if you just talk with them? What about if you lose those arguements?
Slowly going crazy at work... they found a way to make the voices work too.

After getting a couple Barkie's and loving that full convex grind. I put a convex grind on my Delica, Millie and one of my Stretch's All turned out very well and strop up to an incredibly sharp edge. Its hard to tell if their sharper than a Spydie finished up on the ultra fine sharpmaker stones  But the sharpness seems to last longer on my fairly hard use Millie and Stretch. Try it if you hate it you can always go back to the V edge bevel. Only a little metal lost.

After purchasing a Scandi some time ago with a really thin edge and finished with a convex edge I thought to myself, what the heck, with the saber grind on some of the Spydies I have now, why not take advantage of this edge on my hard use knives? As a result, now I've had a convex edge on my E4 ZDP, D4 ZDP, Military S30V for some time now. I thin the edge to <15 deg then put it on the mouse pad at 1500-2000 grits. I finish with the SM with ultra fine hones and put a micro bevel on at about 20 deg. These edges just won't quit with this treatment. They make darn good whittler's surprisingly also after giving them this kind of edge also, as well as making great heavy use utility edges without a whimper. Give it a shot!
