A while back I got a dodo. I absolutely love it! What I would like is to have that ball bearing lock on a medium-sized, 'plain', inexpensive knife. Maybe a byrd? The reason, it would be a great first lockblade for a kid. The lock is really strong . Yet it does not take the hand strength needed by a backlock, and it does not put the hand in the path of the blade like a linerlock.
It will be time to get my daughter her first knife soon; I am so excited!
BTW, I am only a minor spydernut and lurker here, so I hope y'all don't mind me chiming in.

Ball Bearing lock for kids?

FWIW, I got myself my first ball bearing lock in the Dodo as well a couple of months back.
I did find the BB lock on the Dodo a bit hard to engage. The design of the knife and the buttery smooth action of the blade almost has no equal :p However, when it came to disengaging the lock....I am sadly no fan of the BB lock. I found it difficult to use my fat thumbs and nail to get in behind the ball to unlock it.
Maybe it was just that I am more used to backlocks and linerlocks ??? I would think that for a first blade something like a backlock, or linerlock would be safer. BUT.... you did say that it is easier for you than a backlock.....
Maybe a bigger ball bearing would help.

Admit it, secretly your favorite thing in the world is watching all us forumites freak out with anticipation when you announce things like that. You just calm put in your 2 cents, give us just enough info to make us excited and then let our imaginations go nuts. And then chuckle at us as we take guesses.
By the way, I bet its a Salsa type knife with a ball lock. :)

A first knife for your daughter! That is exciting. I still remember my dad giving me my first knife, and I recall giving my daughter her first knife. It is a big moment.
I do have some reservations about the ball bearing lock, however. I got one of the first Dodos, and I did experience some failures of the lock. I understand that the design has been refined since then. You could search the forum for discussions about this issue, if you like, and of course you have your own experiences with your Dodo to draw upon.
I did get a replacement for that first Dodo, and I admire the design of the blade and handle. I just have that lingering concern from my early experience with the ball lock.
As to your being a "minor spydernut and lurker," you are a Registered User, same as the rest of us (except Taz, of course). I hope you will post as often as you wish.
And let us know about giving that first knife to your young lady! :)

Sales would prefer that I say nothing until a design is ready to come out. I get the "glares" when I "leak info", because the sales dept has to deal with questions from customers and they "haven't heard about that one", cuz it's still in R&D.
I'm pretty transparent so I share information, especially when the question is asked.
The small bits of info I do let out are the compromise.

Funny, I have come to have been impressed by what is know by your SFO sales staff. I asked about a couple of different "future" models that are in R&D and have been giving information that I thought was still in the rumor stage on the forum.
I love it when you "leak Info" Please don’t stop. Makes me feel informed about company that I seem to give so much of my money :)
Care to "leak any Info" or you know... release dates of a couple models said to come out rather soon as in... the Urban, G-10 Delica's, Enduras that sort of things. :)
Maybe a compromise or two :)
