Hollow Ground and Flat Ground

#1

Post by enyong112 »

Hi Guys,

I'm relatively new, how can you tell if the knife has a hollow ground or a flat ground? w/o looking at the blade profile up close I mean from the point like in the picture, can you tell by looking from the side?

What :spyder: 's have hollow grounds? Flat grounds?

1 is hollow; 2 is full-flat.

You usually can tell by looking at the side also. After you see a few it gets easier to tell them apart.

I did see a really nice super-flat ground Military this past weekend. It was done by Alan Folts, it is his personal Military. I thought the Military was thin already, but he thinned it out some more. Really smooth looking, and thiiiiin.
I am edcing my CPM-D2 Military now, but I want to find a S30v Military and pay Alan to make it even thinner.

Look at the way the light hits the blade in the photo. The curve of the hollow grind will reflect the light differently than a flat grind. A full flat grind will of course not show a break line like a saber grind, either flat or hollow.

Well,

let' see if I can get this right:

1. Hollow saber ground (i.e. SS Delica, SALTs)

2. Full flat ground (i.e. Caly3, Manix, Stretch)

3. Flat saber ground (i.e. FRN Endura, Delica)

4. chisel ground (all serrated blades)

5.flat saber ground with MASSIVE secondary bevel (not sure about that)

6. that's what is called "ballig" in german; the dictionary translates it to "crowned" or "spherical". Please correct me with the right term for it. AFAIK mostly found on custom knives.

As Tom Krein, himself, just said to me, not 25 minutes ago, "Full flat grind is where it's at."

What more can possibly be said?

Servus Dennis,

point 1 - 5: quite correct :)

A sample for edge type #6 is the original FB01 Bill Moran (with leather sheat) IMO only on this SKU Spyderco used the "balligen Schliff" (sorry for all English Speakers, I don't know the translation too).

Here's the results of a recent poll of preferences for grind types. If I could find it, I'd bump it so you could vote.

Hi Peter,

ok, since I don't own a FB Spyderco, it becomes clear why I didn't know it would be an example for "convex grind" :) Thanx for that....they are somehow flying under my radar right now :o

That's what I did in my 1st post :)
and Peter gave one for the grind #6, so I think we're quite complete now :D

Of course, there are MUCH more spydies as ex. for every grind, but I listed some of the more common models.

For me, full flat ground too, please :-)

Hmmm... looking at my black bladed Native right now, I would have said: closer to #3, flat saber ground :-)

BUT the online catalog says:
The blade itself is hollow-ground CPM-S30V steel with a weight reducing swedge ground from the spine.
which would be #1.

Who am I to argue with the catalog?

Denis, you set my nerves on the edge. From my memory I would say all Natives have hollow ground blades. Who am I to trust my memory? A good reason to check all my Natives and what do I see: all are hollow ground :)

Peter,

I wasn't sure about it because I was ambivalent when trying to FEEL it; and the "light-trick" (meaning to see how the light is reflected, like Raqudu explained) obviously doesn't work on my COATED blade :D

But I have an OIF Native on the way, so this problem will be solved soon

OT on- looking forward to this very special Native... I love the looks of the tan colored handle and the unpainted metal parts! -OT off

When looking at my pacific Salt, it was easy to tell, though. That's why I included the SALTs in my original post and not the Native. After all, it was intended to help enyong112 to distinguish between the grinds, even when looking at a pic :)

Ok, my OIF Native is here, and I love it!

(I'd want to be the purchase seen as an act of respect for the soldiers who risk their lives everyday, not as a disrespectful pretension or arrogation on my side.)

Anyway: NOW with the non-coated blade, the HOLLOW grind couldn't be more obvious

And as a sidenote, the action of this Native is SO MUCH better than that of the Black bladed Native! It opens smooth and without the "roughness" I was used to with the C41BBK. I think that this problem is due to the coating, but it is kind of annoying sometimes...and on top of that, the OIF Native is clearly on a different (=better) sharpness level. I'll call this "Scary Sharp" anytime!

@enyong112, if you want to, I'll happily post a pic of the hollow ground Native (and Salt :-)) next to a saber flat ground Delica or Endura to show the differences on a picture. In fact, I never paid too much attention to this difference before :o
