Caly 3 Question

#1

Post by MANIXWORLD »

After speculating a bit,i've had to make a choice on a G10 handle Spydie.
I'm very keen on the Caly3 model.I see that its got VG10 bladesteel.
Is the Caly3 the best buy in its pricerange.
i've also seen different models, only on photos in other bladesteel-CPMs30v,which were probably older models?
After what i've seen on photos the Caly3 VG10 looks like a perfect edc.-about the same size as the Delica4?plse help me choose?
ps.love flatground blades.

Here's my 0.02:

I really like the looks of the Caly. however, I already have a Delica 4, and the Caly is almost the same size, same blade material, so why not go for something a little more different from the Delica? What about a Para or a Millie? I'm guessing you already have a Manix and a Mini Manix. The Mini Manix would be my choice if I were looking for a G10 handled knife to add to my collection. YMMV though and the Caly is a great looking knife. Best of luck with your decision, it won't be easy.
My collection so far: Delica SS PE, Delica 4 FRN PE, Endura FRN SE, Manix 2 G10 PE. Since I've officially been bitten by the bug, the collection is sure to grow... :)

If you get the Caly 3 VG10 there'll be a problem - you'll like it too much! Seriously, it's a great choice - feels great, cuts great, the G10 feels great, and VG10 is a superior steel. I hope this helps.

- best wishes, Jazz.

All depends on your needs and preferences.

Probably it was UK Pen knife, it doesn' t have lock, made in Golden, has S30V.
To the best of my knowledge, Caly3 was made only with VG10 and ZDP189/420 laminate.

I have Blue D4 ZDP-189, I stopped to carry it after I bought Caly3 a year ago.
I EDC Caly3 every day since than.

Yes, unless you can manage to find an original Stretch. :D

Right now the S30V ones ones with roughly the same size blade would be:

Native - unlined FRN handle, thin, light, excellent buy for the money - but not flat ground.

UK Penknife - non locking, unlined, version of the Caly 3. A bit lighter if that's a plus and you can live without a lock.

T-Mag - extremely non locking and extremely expensive. Novelty is it's only strong point, and that wears off very quickly. Great for locating dropped needles in shag carpet, otherwise not much to recommend it as a "user".

Paramilitary - worst blade / handle ratio of any knife in this blade length range. Longer, thicker, bulkier, and the 4mm thick blade cancels out much of the benefit of the full flat grind.

I can already see myself using the Caly3 everyday.
G10 is such a great handlematerial and combined with everything else the Caly3 has to offer,i think its a Great overall package.
Thanx 4 great feedback.

Caly 3 is a really sleek, ergonomic knife as well as an excellent Slicer and Cutter. You'll like it.
For heavier cutting tasks, I prefer the worst blade/ handle ratio of the Para :o

The Caly3 was the first knife that I had ever carried that I couldn't find anything to ***** about. I carry it as a back-up edc, but have never felt under-knifed. (It will completely cut through a 16 0z. water bottle) Anytime that I need to carry discretely, it is my first choice.

I just got my G10 Caly3, and I like it so much it has almost shunted my Native, Salt I , mini Persian and Lava out of my pockets. I am now considering getting a CF Caly3 just because I love the Caly 3 so much. The only perceivable difference for me between the G10 and the CF models is obviously the handle grippiness (I know bladesteel etc...), which is the reason I pulled the trigger on the G10 one first.

I think for a FFG blade at that price range you will hard presed to find something to beat that design, and usefulness. And if you even go up another price bracket you will find the Caly 3 will hold its ground against its more expensive brethren.

Not a surprise. I knew that. Your Caly3 is the big brother of your Kopas.
BTW, I didn't see pictures of the new Kopa.

Finally, somebody said it. Not having the long history on this forum, I was too timid to say it myself.

Sorry Roman :)

I've been really busy with fundraising and charity work of late. Will get my photos updated and post them in my Picture Thread. It is very nice that new PAP Kopa, but difficult to photograph without proper lighting :D

I love my Caly3. Especially the VG-10 steel, which I find somewhat preferable to S30V.
