a while ago i lent my friend my serrated stainless steel police when he went trekking across nepal, so three guesses what he does, thats right folks he loses it (murder in my eyes) don't worry tho he'll pay up... eventually... neway in the meantime i got my serrated military since then. now i'm without a military/police size plain edged spydie (except for my civilian but that don't count <img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>). which is where you guys (and gals) come in, which should i buy as a replacement... the only criteria are it needs to be plain edged (50/50 at a pinch) and roughly military/police sized. i was considering a G-10 police or a plain starmate, not too keen on the shape of the starmates blade tho, prefere them with a little more point, also thinking about a howard veile but it looks a bit fragile what with the micarta and all, prehaps a vesuvius, but i think they are smaller. enough rambling. i'm open to suggestions,

The Starmate has a beefy 5mm thick blade. Yes, some may not like the shape, but one would think that the thicker blade would be more resistant to bending, breaking, etc. I own both a serrated Starmate & serrated SS Police. I tend to be a little more gentle when using the Police because of it's thinner blade point.
If you have the opportunity, I would do a side-by-side comparison with the Police & Starmate. You'll notice the significant difference in blade points, both in shape and thickness. IMHO, I would take a plain-edged Starmate over the Police for rugged use.
If the blade point of the Starmate just doesn't suit you, consider the G-10 Police to replace the one that was lost. I really like the Chinook but cannot comment on it because I don't own one yet.

thanks for the replys, chinook that is one seriously nice knife in image 1, is that the full size micarta calypso? very cool indeed but does it come plainedged? i assume its discontinued. not too keen on the chinook looks a bit too... erm... chunky.
how about thre peter herbst? little pricy but looks extremely cool only ATS-55 tho.
i found this photo in my computer but i can't remember who posted it or what it is, whatever it is it looks exceedingly cool, is this a renagade like in chinooks 2nd picture? i think it began with p, whatever it is i'd like one, looks like a bigger nastier native in G-10.

yeah whoopsy just reread the specs, its about the size of my calypso jr. too small. that jd smith is one nice knife, never handled a knife made of micarta tho, it looks fragile. in fact the whole thing looks a bit fragile, if it came in G-10 it'd be pretty much perfect. is it discontinued cos i don't think i've seen one before. heres a little question for you, the g-10 police (PE) blade doesn't have the thin inch or so at the end of the blade like the SS version does it? i ask because i've seen photos of G-10 police with AND without it, is this because there are multiple variants like there are several variants of the military (laser etching etc) if there are which is the newer version? and are there any other differences? thanks for taking the time to reply

If you find the Peter Herbst to be interesting, I would definitely suggest the Wegner. They both have similar looking blades but the Wegner is more in line with the size of the Police and Chinook. Also, the Wegner, like the Starmate is now a discontinued item, so you might want to snap one up while you can. johnfjensen.com has some pretty good prices for the Wegner right now.
ruxton, I Micarta is hardly fragile. In fact, it is incredibly durable. Randall Knives have been using Micarta handles on their fighting and survival knives for about 50 years.
The only knock I have ever heard about Micarta is that some people feel it is too slick, but not in my opinion.
Like the Calypso, the Viele has VG-10 steel The Viele has a nice,low profile. I still would take the Military, plain edge, over either of those knives as a field knife.

The JD Smith in micarta is an _incredibly strong_ knife and quite large, plus VG-10 is heaven. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> I find it to be the perfect trekking companion, although not an EDC anymore. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
The Starmate has the advantage of blade thickness, like Lsaulog said, so that's another good option. I do not own this knife yet... YET. But it's the next one on my list.
