My First Spydie!

#1

Post by Tracer »

Hi all,

You may recall I was trying to decide which Spydie to get first, the delica or endure or Native. The only store that stocks spyderco in my town has a Harpy (SE) on display, which the sales clerk tried to tell me was a Tasman.
Anyway, I think I must have the best GF ever. My birthday's coming up next week Wednesday, we decided we'd give each other cash instead of gifts this year.

So we stop by the mall so I can show her the only spyderco model in the town. (and hopefully get her to understand why every second word from my mouth begins with S) Right there and then she turns around and talks the sales guy into selling it to her for R650.00! To put it in perspective the Harpy goes for R1920.00 (for the VG-10, this one was ATS). Sounds outrages, but they've apparently been trying to get this one sold for years now, go figure.
She is incredible, of course I'm not allowed to look at it or touch it till later, but I've been walking aroubnd with a huge grin on my face all weekend.

So my first Spydie turned out to be a Harpy, I'm not complaining at all.
The code next to the bar code says HD, as I understand it this means the knife was made in August 2004. Does anyone perhaps have some info on this knife to share?

I'm so stoked, I now own a Spydie and feel like one of the gang.

Take care

Good for you (and her). You got a heck of a deal, more or less getting it here for about $25-$30. Ya' think she'd be interested in a job as official forum negotiator? :D

The Harpy is a great way to start! Congratulations on the knife (and you'll better put a ring on that girlfriend before she gets away. You are in South Africa, the diamond capital of the world, afterall! :D )

But that is still coming down from what would be $275 here (R1920.00).

That's exactly the Harpy I got myself a while ago... ATS-55 rulez!

My Harpy is DEFINITELY the sharpest SE knife I EVER owned; and after all, it is the Spydie that draw me into the addiction (John Locke from LOST had a Harpy on his vest), but that's another story :) .

Hawkbills are truly SPYDERCO, you chose one of the best knives they make for your first Spydie! :D

Enjoy you present (and your GF.... mine is not as encouraging  )

and let us know how it works for you!

Dennis

P.S.:...and by the way: Happy birthday (to come) !

Congrats my friend. A great knife to start with. It will for sure start an addiction however. Your girlfriend and my girlfriend need to meet. Maybe they can teach each other something.

Exchange rate

NativeAmerican, thanks for the rate info. I used to work for AMEX in the UK. You are right though I shouldn't get excited because I got the knife at an almost normal price. (no sarcasm or nastyness implied) I'm just so used to getting ripped off here. We usually get a rate close to R12 or even as high as R19 to the US$. I'm just thankful right now, I'll get worked up when I make my next purchase.

Don't stress guys, I'm saving for the ring as we speak and will be having the father in-law chat with regards to permission in December and if all goes well we'll be married in September next year. She is such a blessing.

Thanks for all your support, I can't wait to get my hands on my harpy.

take care now,

Tracer

Hi Tracer, i assume that you are from SA.
As you refer to the price in rands.
As soon as i see a Spydie and its really a catcher, then the price is also above a R1000. Usualy the Golden C. ones fall in2 this category.
Im looking at the Adventura and the Para military by xmas or something.
At the moment the para mil. is a catcher-G10!
