Re: Military D2
Re: Military D2
Well... Pulled the trigger on one of these last night, and it should be here next week. I got my CF BG-42 Military last year on 9/11. I realized it would almost be a year, so it seemed fitting to get this one. I really wanted a black bladed Military, but with the nature of things, I figured I could always get one of those, and supply seems limited on this knife at the moment. So, anyway...
So all you Green Military fans... tell me what to look forward to.

Well Mark, :) I'll say that they are a really nice knife. However I thought the color would be darker than it was. I love the knife but I don't like the color of the handles, so I ended up getting rid of all 4 of the CPM-D2 Mili's I had.
In fact I just traded one to a fellow forumite for an SE ATR. It should arrive today.
The D2 Mili was the sharpest knife out of the box I've ever had. I'm not just saying that either. I don't say that with every new knife I get. It really was sharp. The lockup was perfect on all 4 and everything was good. Take a look at my pictures in the Picture Gallery. I used one of them that I had for a couple days and I cut paper but that was it. I just couldn't get past the color and kept putting the black CPM-S30V SE Mili back in my pocket.
I think you'll like it and I think you'll give it a fair review too.

I bought 2. One is being returned because of the initial amount of rust that was on it. The handle is much lighter green than I anticipated as well. In my opinion it looks really good in artificial (flourescent) light inside, but appears really light and dull outside. Some people will like it and some won't. Neither of mine were as sharp as I expected. My para's came with a better edge.
I still like the knife, and I'll definitely keep one since they're different.

Yeah, when I would look at mine it would look almost khaki in color. It looked very tan with a slight hint of green. It just really didn't look like I expected Foliage Green G10 to look. When side by side with my Foliage Green Delica 4 it looked lighter than the Delica. Oh well, no big deal.spyderdog wrote:...The handle is much lighter green than I anticipated as well. I have had my fill of black "tactical" knives, so I dont mind the color (but I too would have preferred darker green). Not the sharpest knife out of box in my experience, but that is compared to ZDP caly. I really like the open back design and light weight.
I used to have a manix and did not carry it because it was so heavy and wide that it basically took up a whole pocket. The millie is much better for EDC; today I am carrying it for the first time and I like how it is light and narrow enough not to be in the way. If you bought the military as an EDC, I think you will be happy with it.
heck I may even get s30v millie sometime in the future.

The color? Joe

I know that, but I wouldn't get rid of , nor buy a knife based on it's color. There again, is it any different than me getting knives to try their steel? to each his own. Joe

I guess I would be surprised if the G10 was an exact match to the FRN, since Sherwin-Williams can't seem to match any particular color of paint from batch to batch using the same formula. I won't know until next week whether I like the color or not; but I can say I have bought a few D4's on color alone...
AND I STILL WANT A CPM-D2 PARA!!!
Unless Sal would consider a D2 Ocelot with "pug-less" foliage green G10 scales?!?
[BTW where is the emoticon for -DROOLING- ?]

Definitely true. I still feel like this one is substantially different, but to my knowledge there was never anything that said this was supposed to be the same color, right? This one is growing on me. It's a good outdoor color..not super noticeablemarkg wrote:You have to consider, you are dealing with two different handle materials.
If you look at it, black FRN and black G-10 don't look the same, and the G-10 has a lighter, "dusty-ier" look to it.
A few semi-random thoughts:
First, FRN doesn't really compare to G10 as FRN seems to change color depending on light and background--this is true of the foliage green, ZDP blue, waved grey, BRG, even the trainer red. With G10, what you see is what you get.
Second, I do not yet own a Millie as I have always felt it was more knife than I want in a folder--honestly, most of my fixed blades aren't over 4" so why would I own a folder with a blade that long... but I do love D2 so I figured it was time to give the Military a fair trial. With the hope that the Para will follow as I KNOW I will carry the Para...
Finally, deep down I know there will never be, can never be, a D2 Ocelot... the Ocelot is a Seki product while D2 (as well as S30V) are US made--and never the two shall meet. But the foliage G10 just screams to be carried outdoors, and D2 - in my experience - holds up extremely well in a hunting knife; add the fact that the blade shape of the Ocelot (and the Pro-grip for that matter) are about ideal for big game and you have pretty much the perfect folding hunter. So I will dream....
