Finally bought a Poliwog

Post by vampyrewolf »

Between getting my tax refund this week, and the fact that I'm coming up on my 1yr pretty soon here at work.... I figured it was time for a new toy (since I'm still waiting on Craig ;) )

SS/PE June '06 manufacture...

Put it to good use today, 3 of us are putting in early OT helping sort/clean at one of the company's 4 properties... so it went through a few miles of packing paper and tape today over 3hrs. Only real problem was going too far through and having the paper run up off the blade...

Will put up a full review after this weekend, sure to put it through it's paces with a 3 day garage sale.

Congrats on your Polliwog. I've had mine for over 6 months now. Used to carry it EDC. Put it away. Still one of my favorite EDC's. Nice feel and great cutting power for it's size. I also like the looks of it. Cut everything I threw at it with no problems.
It's better to have knife and not need it than to need a knife and not have it.

I've been on the fence about one of those, let me know what you think about it.

Congrats on the new knife!
I've had mine for 6 months now, it was a Christmas gift  . What a great knife. I think it's a beauty and it feels good in the hand. It's a regular part of my EDC rotation.

Cheers,
Mike

Congrats on the Polywog. I don't have one of these in my stable yet :( I will probably have to handle one first.) In reality I think Sal made the CF Caly III to good! It makes it difficult to spring for a new knife when you are having a love affair with the one in your pocket :D

Congrats on a good choice, the Poliwog.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago on eBay and love it. It's a beautiful piece of design and mechanics, especially the spline swedge, handle cutouts, and ball lock. Very elegant. I enjoy looking at it and marveling at it. I probably won't EDC it because it's too nice.

One interesting thing (to me) is that it ships in the open position in the usual Spyderco box. None of the other Spydercos I have (I only have a few so far) ship in the open position.

Ironically, the Poliwog is most attractive in the open position and, in my opinion, not so attractive in the closed position. The other Spydercos that I have are equally attractive in both the closed and open position, but not the Poliwog. This is mostly due to the open notches required for the ball lock. However, this is trivial and NOT a reason to throw the Poliwog out of bed.

Maybe the poliwog doesn't fit in the box when it's closed?

My Poliwog was a (very!) surprise birthday gift from my brother last September. (I was never expecting it.)

I had looked it over online and had no intention of buying one for myself. But now that I have it, I am not sorry I do. It's a cool knife. It's not everything I would ever want in a knife, but the "gee whiz" factor of it makes up for that. It's just a LOT of fun to play with! :)

Strangely, it does fit in the box in the closed position, with a lot of space left over. However, it wouldn't have nearly the WOW factor when you first open the box.

drf: been eyeing the one at my local since they came in... ended up buying the display model (out of stock and I wanted one now)

OuchThatsSharp: gotten a few compliments on it... both for the look and the way it sailed through just about everything.

smcfalls13: you won't be dissappionted, go buy one now

CajunMike: I've got a feeling it'll be my work toy... or at least my dress knife

jaislandboy: Craig? I'm waiting on a custom from CKE (aka Craig), but I'm not one... :p

whitefeather: If you think the caly jr fits your hand like it was built for you, try out the poliwog. ;)

ahearn: forget about it being too nice for EDC. Toss it in your pocket and go nuts. It's a SS :spyder: , it'll take anything you throw at it.

peacefuljeffrey: you have it loose enough to snap open yet? Just barely flick the wrist and it's locked open :D

When I went in for this, it was a tough choice between the poliwog and the kris. Might get myself a kris anyways in a couple weeks before they're all gone (don't see this design staying around for a 2nd year unfortunately).

I've put it through it's paces in the last few days, cutting a LOT of packing paper and tape, collapsing boxes, cutting through nylon straps, 18awg wire (both cutting and stripping), more tape, handful of packages... only thing I haven't really done yet is use it on food. I'll give it the usual 1/2 page review when I've got a week on it (and have done some food prep). So far I'm giving it 2 thumbs up and a "why didn't I buy it sooner".

I have both the Kris and the Poliwog...I got the Kris first...a beauty of a knife...however I am more used to traditional types of Kris knives...so for me the folding Kris just didn't do it....but when I held the Poliwog in my hand it just fit there so much better....when I first saw the pics of the Poliwog I wasn't impressed at all, once in the hand it was a totally different story....Doc :D

vampyrewolf, no no no no no I don't have it that loose -- haven't carried it all that much, either. It's more of a "keep it safe" knife, to me, since it was a birthday gift, somewhat expensive, and kinda rare. (Not that I have kept it in mint condition, though.)

I am not a fan of my knives being that loose, btw. Asking for trouble if stopped and examined by a cop, no?

not so much the fact that it's loose... it's just smooth
have to grab it right for the short blade to flick open, took a while to find the spot, still takes 2-3 tries sometimes.

The big thing about not being worried about being searched is not giving them a reason to search :p

besides, just about any spydie can be flicked... even the small ones just take a good shot with the thumb (think flipping a coin)

Hey Pat. Good deal man. The 'wog has been growing on me little by little. Any chances of getting a picture of it with your EDC D'fly?

Peace!
