BG-42 military

#1

Post by powercut »

Hey guys, I'm planning on buying a BG-42 military but then I heard about some chipping issues. How serious is it?

So who has some users feedback/review on the knife mentioned above?

I'm one of the people who had a chip

There have been no further chipping even after several weeks of hard use :)

I'm pretty sure the chip came while sharpening with the corners on my UF rods for the sharpmaker. Due to what I believe is a manufacturing error there are some notches on the corners on my UF rods. Sharpmaker rods are a lot harder than blade steel so this could easily cause a chipped edge.

This is the only fault I've seen of sharpmaker rods and I now only use the flats on my UF rods.

So aside from this incident it has been perfect. It is slightly better than the very close to perfect G10 S30V Millie IMHO.

Hi again NoFair! :D

I just got the ultra fine rods for my sharpmaker and used them on my S30V Military. Unbelievable how sharp I got this knife with them! It must be sharper now than it has ever been, even out of the box.

I also noticed that one of the UF rods has an uneven edge. The other two are ok, so I'll just have to remember to avoid the bad one.

Military is still my absolutely favourite :spyder: so I'm seriously thinking about getting the BG-42 CF version as well. I just have to somehow think how to get it, as my missus promised to kill me if I order any more knives this year (bought a good dozen so far this year...).

I love my all my Spydies, but somehow Millie is the one I keep on grabbing with me most of the time. I'm a big guy, so it's size is perfect for me. I don't feel it's big at all, just proper size pocket knife.

In my understanding BG-42 is an excellent steel and chipping should not be one of it's characters. Wasn't there some cost issue why Spyderco and Chris Reeve for example moved from BG-42 to S30V instead of quality issues of the steel?

the bg-42 is my favorite big spydie. can't say a thing bad about it. the extra grippy CF both feels and looks great. highly recommended!

I got three or four chips in the edge of my BGCF Military the first time I used it, one of which was quite large. I suppose it had something to do with the finish nail in the side of the rafter I was shaving down  :o . I didn't have any more issues with it after I reprofiled and before the ZDP Endura kicked it out of my pocket.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

It is a supurb knife. Definately my go-to knife for camping. I love the Peel-ply CF and BG-42 steel has to be among my favorite steels if not my most favorite because I can get it sharper than any other steel I have. It also has a great bite to it.

If my life was in danger I'd hold of on this millie and wait for one or both of the upcomming sprint runs.

The CF with it's lighter weight and greater stiffness is a bigger advantage than BG-42 vs S30V. Both get very sharp and keep a good edge for a long time. BG might be easier to get scary hair cleaving sharp, but for me the difference is small.

This was a knife I wanted for years. When it finally arrived it was a surprise, and it didn't let me down. I've always liked BG42 since I'd tried it and the Millie is probably the best I've ever had in this steel. I can't find a single fault with it. This is the only one besides my enduras that I have an extra of. That's how highly I think of it. Joe

I also ordered 2 after trying it out, but a rather dishonest postal worker has one of them
