Worker Shadowbox

#1

Post by spyderwa »

This is a project that I have been thinking of for a while now. Finally had a few hours available so here it is. I wanted to make a little display for desk or shelf showing the first Spyderco knife. I really did not want to lock away my first-gen Worker in a box so I made one for the display. I started with an Ikea shadowbox, Worker patent drawings from the internet, and a little Spyderco artwork. The knife was made from plastic-blind material that was shaped with a Dremel, sanded, and painted. My first-gen Worker was used for the measurements so it is 1:1 scale. It was epoxy glued onto machine screws and bolted onto the back plate. The drawings were printed onto adhesive sticker paper and trimmed into place. I probably spent more time on it than I should have but at the end I was satisfied. If I had to do it again I would spend a little more time getting the fake wood grain off of the surface of the plastic blind material. Just thought you all might like to see. Thanks for looking.

Here is the link for searching patents. You may have to create a free account to view pdf. images. I don't think it will let you download the images, but you can print them out from the pdf. viewer toolbar. Search under Glesser not Spyderco. Look for the older ones to find the Worker. Have fun, you can learn a lot.

Very nice work, I love the patent pictures on the inside.

Now you just need to get yourself an origional slab sided two screw worker to put in the box :D

EDIT: I completely skipped over the part that said you didn't want to lock it in a box :o

I forgot to mention that my 1st-gen Worker is really an early 3-screw model. It still has the flat slab sides Technically it would be the 2nd variation of the first model with 3 screws and one handle side thicker than the other. Still looking for the first 2-screw Worker at a price that I don't have to sell my car to buy.

Next one, if I do another, will be better. I like the idea of being able to have a knife display in your office that will show your interests, not to mention what you have in your pocket. Maybe a Military shadowbox? Or first five Spydercos?

Google patents

Guys, type google patents in your addy bar, the type spyderco in the search box. Google has really improved the ability to view patents over USPTO.org.

oh, and Spyderwa...AWESOME! If I had that worker I would send it to you to put in your box.

Hey, is there a Spyderco Museum yet?
There isn’t any symbolism. The sea is the sea. The old man is an old man. The boy is a boy and the fish is a fish. The shark are all sharks no better and no worse. All the symbolism that people say is ****.
