Screws.

Ok, Like some of you guys I generally take down my knives and clean them up and re lube them every once and a while. I was reassembling my E4 when I just happened to hear that noise.... The most dreaded noise when working with small parts. The sound of a really small steel screw bouncing off the counter top and the silence that follows. The silence comes when that important little bit of steel hits THE CARPET!  Well. I was lucky enough to have a really strong neodymium magnet on hand so after a few passes, I hear the click of a screw on it. :D HORRAY :p .

But... Now this is a but.. What if I didn't have a high powered wonder magnet? Or my eagle like gaze that has found BBs in silver shag carpet (don't ask, lol)? Where would one go about finding replacements? I'd imagine SFO would gladly hook a fellow up, but is there a specific size that one could look for at the local machinist shop? For substitution purposes while new hardware is coming in the mail?

And just a bit off topic. I found that reassembling my E4 without the lock bar and installing it afterwards works much easier than the stacking sandwich method of stressing the spring holder while stacking the liners. Much easier on the small dimples that hold the spring block in place when stressed. I put it all to gather minus the lock. Push the lock in from the spine and hold it in with one hand and slide the "flat sided pin" in to hold it. Works like a dream, and soo much easier IMO.

When working with small metal parts I think a magnet is very useful... unless it's a computer.

Yeah, I keep mine stuck to the side of my desk. Another one of those, "Rather have it and not need it.." things.
I probably should have put this in Off Topic...

The SFO has E4 and D4 repair kits, so i'm sure there are ways to get those should you need them.

They have screws, clips, and something else i can't remember right now

I have a small magnetic tray that I use for just this reason! I got mine at Harbor Freight.

mikebandw186 - is the other item in the kit a back spacer?
