Thats just stupid. I don't even understand why "switchblade and butterfly knives" are illegal in the first place, big deal you can open them one handed or quickly... For that matter I might as well just carry a steak knife around all day long that way I don't have to bother with the hassle of opening it at all it'll be ready to go all the time. As for switchblades and butterfly knifes they are just illegal because lawmakers and ingnorant sheeple have nothing better to do with there time and our money but make things that shouldn't be illegal, illegal. Another good point is that most knife related crimes are committed with dare I say it KITCHEN KNIVES! yes kitchen knives. Not switchblades, balis, lock backs, frame lock or any other folding knives. I guess soon they will be banning all kitchen knives in homes, restaurants and Work places all around the world and we'll soon be cutting out food with grade school safety scissors or maybe they'd consider those "a gravity weapon" as I can flip scissors around pretty fast with those holes at the ends.
It just makes me sick to my stomach when there are plenty of other real issues in the world today that need attention and are more of a priority then picking on tools that have been around for 1000's of years and have built the world as we know it.. Really where would we be without cutting tools? These people really need to get there head out of there asses excuse my language. Sorry for the long rant here but it just makes me very angry.

There isn’t any symbolism. The sea is the sea. The old man is an old man. The boy is a boy and the fish is a fish. The shark are all sharks no better and no worse. All the symbolism that people say is ****.

"....If you did not qualify as an authorized dealer or purchaser at the time of acquisition of the knife(s), please return your purchase directly to Spyderco for a credit or refund...."
- This clause is wholly insane! But it does leave a "paper trail" when you buy on-line!

"...Spyderco will not be manufacturing this product in the future with any improperly imported components..."
- And so now maybe there will be a "Golden" Spyderco bali at last! At maybe three times the price??!

Bottomline.
Sometimes, outsourcing isn't the answers the everything. And in this case more trouble than it's worth.

The only way we'll see another Spydie Bali is if it's made in the US.

As it stands right now, only customs law classifies Balisongs as Switchblades(and some state laws), Federal Law(the one that actually matters) does NOT(for now.)

Provided Federal law doesn't change, it's still perfectly legal to mail Balisongs in the US(provided your state allows possession of them).

This was brought up on another forum, and it bears mentioning here...

It's complete and utter bull **** that of all the companies that import Bali parts, Spyderco was the one fined. The one company that made provisions to ensure their product was legal in their state by making the latch only lock in the closed position. Why couldn't they have fined the many Chinese companies that steal designs and turn them into CCCs. There are more of those imported daily than Spyderco has made total.

Not to mention that IF a crime were to be committed with a Balisong, the odds are very much in favor of that Balisong being a $5 CCC, rather than a Spyderfly.

We CANNOT think like this guys!!!!!!!!

WE NEED TO BAN TOGETHER!!!

What would happen if the NRA started to give up, or talk about "not enough people". Have you looked at how many people are a member of BladeForums, Knifeforums, USN and several other US based knife websites?!?!?!

We NEED TO UNITE!!!! We need to join up and fight, FIGHT, FIGHT! We CAN CHANGE THE LAW! This is a small victory at the expense of an exemplary company. We need to each buy a spyderco and support our fallen friends at Spyderco. We need to help our own get back up from getting knocked the-****-down. Only together, can we be heard and make a difference. Just as the NRA does.

Take a look at this site brother. Its a start. Donate what you can, and of course the most valuable thing you can donate is your TIME! By spreading the word, posting up on websites and spreading the message that there are thousands upon thousands of Americans that will NOT stand for this!

I'm up for marching on DC(not kidding either). I don't much care for my job right now anyway.

Technically, Spyderco HAD to plead guilty, because they would have lost either way, apparently the loophole I thought existed, isn't a loophole, just something that's rarely enforced.

It's an accurate verdict, but that doesn't change the fact that it's unfair. The Switchblade laws are outdated.

The thought of several thousand(doubt that many would show up, more like several dozen) Bali enthusiasts sitting on the steps of the Capital Building executing a well choreographed group manipulation with Spyderflies would be a sight to behold. It would be a perfect demonstration of what Balisongs are REALLY for. Balisongs are not weapons, they're adult Yo-yos(can't claim credit for this, it's been said many many times).

Now the question is: that site mentions $75 000 fine + $400 000 in goods.
That's almost half a million USD.

Is :spyder: going to survive that? I admit I'm not knowledgable in what figures Spyderco (or other knife companies) operate but it seems like a LOT. (even if one would get $50 net profit (highly optimistic/fantastic IMHO) it means to sell 10 000 knives/products just to cover the loss :(

Well, Spyderco, for obvious reasons, may never say much about this.

Not to trivialize the impact on them in any way, but I can only speculate (and hope), based on claims the Government has made regarding other seizures and recoveries, that the 400K figure is based on the "potential" full MSRP of knives assembled from the seized parts, and is probably somewhat inflated even for that. Their "math" in these instances is primarily an attempt to make themselves look "productive".

U.S. paranoia continues to escalate. How dare you tell me a piece of sharpened metal is illegal.

I received an e-mail from NGK yesterday notifying me that my LONG standing order for a SzaboFly was canceled due to the recent court decision, and that they would not be receiving any SzaboFlys EVER. What a crime. I'm a grown man living in a free country. I should be allowed to play with knives if I want to.

Here's an idea. How about we start a new thread called "The $50K Campaign" or "The $75K Campaign" or something, where we post our purchases of knives we've bought *above and beyond* our normal buying habits, specifically for the purpose of helping offset the negative impact to Spyderco a little. Now, this forum can't realistically buy an extra half million $ in knives, but if we work at it, with sustained group effort, we might meet a more moderate goal of, say $75K, the amount of the original fine, or maybe $50K, one tenth of the impact, either of which would certainly help. Assume an average knife price of $50, we could reach the $75 goal with 1500 additional knives purchased and the $50K goal with 1000 additional knives purchased. (The realistic size of the goal depends on how many of us there are -- anybody know how many people on this forum?) Now, to make the idea work, we'd need to be "on the honor system" that we are buying above and beyond our normal amount of purchases. Otherwise, we are just appearing to make an extra effort when we're not, but we Spydie customers know what integrity is! The other part that would make this interesting would be a running total of the amount we've spent. So, say Doc Snubnose for example (I'm picking on him because he can handle it!) starts the process and buys and extra 3 Yojimbos (b/c we all know it's his favorite knife!) and that is $240, so he posts "3 Yojimbos, $240." Then I come along as the second guy to post and I buy 3 Calys. I post "3 Calys, $210. Total = $450." The next person posts and calculates the new total, and we can watch the numbers grow. Just an idea. What do you think? It would be a way to put our money were our mouths are.

Edit: after a few PMs on this topic I pulled the trigger. See the thread: "In Memoriam...The Fly Fund."

Interesting idea. Might I suggest you also add that they buy from the SFO to try to optomize the profit on Spyderco's behalf? :)

Sure, why not post your idea under the "Fly Fund" thread? Also, as we reach consensus, I can edit the wording of the initial post.
