New non-Spyderco ZDP

#1

Post by Harry White »

I pulled the trigger on this today -- my first major non-Spyderco knife. Don't worry, I'm not abandoning the mighty Spyder, but I just had to have this one...

thanks brian.

it's a Mini Cyclone.

i like the fact that it has a leaf shaped blade -- uncommon for kershaw. and i like the look of the gray Ti and black coated ZDP.

I wonder if it is solid or laminated zdp does anyone know? what does that knife run it seems zdp and ti would be pretty pricey for a kershaw, they do make awesome knives it seems their prices are usually very reasonable as well.

I pulled the trigger on one earlier too!
I have been really impressed by alot of the Kershaw offerings; my first clipped pocket knife was a Kershaw and I put them up-close to (but never over  ) Spyderco.

That's a Framelock "monolock" , correct? It does look pretty good. Joe

I like it. If I weren't sockin a way cash for a new spydie I'd think about one of those.

I was eyeballing that one today, a very nice looking knife.

I don't own a kershaw, but I have always been impressed with the fit and finish, no play in any examples I've handled.

I really like the Onion/Centofante Wharncliffe model.

A Mini-Cyclone managed to find its way to my house :D (the standard model, i.e. not ZDP / Ti). Great knife with great ergos. Its the 1st Kershaw I've bought in several years, but it's a model that I think many will like.

AFAIK it is solid ZDP-189, coating is used to save them of trouble of finishing ZDP-189...

it's solid ZDP AFAIK too. and its a liner lock, not a frame lock -- the only drawback i see so far.

Kershaw makes great knives, I just wish they'd throw the southpaws something once in a while... :(

Nice, Harry. Is this knife A/O? I like a few of Kershaw's designs (this one included), but the fact that they're almost all exclusively assisted-openers has prevented my from picking one up.

Mine is A/O. Not sure if they make the Cyclone or Mini-Cyclone without the A/O feature.

That's what I figured. With the attention Kershaw seems to be paying to the higher-end users, I wish they'd realise that not everyone appreciates the gimmick factor of the SpeedSafe mechanism. :(

its an A/O, but "this model comes with an "on/off" switch to turn the assisted mechanism on or off."

performance comparison?

#19

Post by JD Spydo »

I would like to know how Kershaw's heat treatment is performing compared to Spyderco's. The Calypso Jr I have been using for the last 21 months I think would be hard to beat.

However I would sure be interested in a performance comparison between the 2 companies.
