One Must Have Spyderco

#1

Post by drf »

I am fairly new to collecting spyderco's. I started in January and have acquired five so far- I love each one with the Captain and Poliwog being my favorites. That said looking around a PE Massad Ayoob is the one spyderco I must have and do not own. What about you all--with your extenisve collections what one spyderco is still out there that you must have?

Well, I reached a point in my collectors live where I've to say - with all my sympathy to :spyder: co - nothing is a 'must have' :)

But a Worker Evolution Set would be nice to have ;)

Pretty well have all my "must haves". A "second generation" (beveled handle) LH PE Mariner and a LH PE Harpy are about the only ones I'm still actively hunting.

well, i just landed what was my one "must have" spydie -- the PE full-sized calypso. only problem is, i'm still too chicken to carry it... :o

right now i've got a bullseye on a couple newer spydies, as well as a few newly disco'd spydies that are available at clearance prices.

one knife i've been putting of getting for WAY too long is a kopa. i'd really like a turquoise one, although the price is rather horrifying... perhaps the new black quince kopa is a more affordable possibility....

The Dodo. It's unconventional, but functional, it's small, but it's big enough for most tasks. The lock is simple but ingenious, and it's quite sheepie friendly.

I'm mainly interested in the new models coming out. But as far as oldies go, if I get a chance to pick up a Lum Tanto or an old Jess Horn collaboration model, and finances allow it, I'll get it.

Lil'Temp PE is in my pocket every day. I hate to say this, because I like so many :spyder: s but this knife has kicked everything else out of the lineup...... If I only owned one this, I wouldn't feel the need for any other folders..... Yes, it's that good.

Maybe not must, but would strongly like to have:

PE Harpy SS (Just too cool  )
If Spyderco has ever made a PE g-10 Harpy, that would be right up there.

*Editted when I realized the thread was called "one" must have :o

If you like carbon fiber and the :spyder: Military I'd get a BG42 Millie while they are still around. Some distributors are running low on stock...

It is the best Millie so far IMHO, and one of the top 3 :spyder: s I've handled.

Why is that? I've been thinking about it since the CF handles looks nice, but thenagain I'm more than happy with my regular S30V Millie, which has been my loyal EDC for years already.

Is BG42 somehow better steel? What's the benefit of BG42 compared to S30V? The CF handles sure look nice, but the normal G-10 handles work fine for me as well.

Additionally, some dealers are writing on their website about BG42/CF Millies: HELP...WE ARE OVERSTOCKED...ON SALE NOW....

So looks like that they are not selling very well?!

Please, I'm not trying to criticize here, I just wan't to know if it's really worth getting BG42/CF Millie and why? I understand it's more rare, but is there anything else about it?

Cheers,
Sterno

It is 6g lighter than a normal S30V Millie (new version). The CF is even grippier than the G10 and stiffer as well. The CF is also prettier :p

It is a slightly better version of an already great knife so it isn't leaps and bounds better, but slightly better in a few ways.

S30V and BG42 are both great steels and peoples preferences vary. BG42 is harder and takes a slightly finer edge IMHO.

I have both and slightly prefer the BG42 one, but I love both and I have used the S30V harder since I've had it longer..

My dealer only had about 10 left a couple of weeks ago, but I think NGK still has quite many.. I do think these might become classics in a few years and I didn't want to miss out while they were easy to get at a good price.

If he already has a Millie the need to get a BG42 one is small, but if he doesn't have one it should be higher up on the need to get list :D
