Recently got my black ZDP Caly Jr. myself and, yeah, it's got the slightest bit of play when closed. I don't personally mind it much though as it locks dead solid with the blade deployed and that oh-so-slight imperfection (the closed play) makes me feel better about using/beating/flipping the **** out of it. :)

It's a gorgeous knife -- love that black FRN, that scale pattern, and that beautiful blade is a phenomenal cutter. It's replaced its heftier Caly III sibling as my mid-sized go-to knife and I'm already on the look out for a good deal on a second one.

Actually to be properly tuned most any lockback, FRN or steel lined, needs just a tiny bit of blade play (laterally) to allow the spring to do its job. It can be adjusted down to a certain extend and be almost imperceptible with screw type pivots but if you take it too far it is hard to open, doesn't snap shut as it should and can make carrying it dangerous if the spring can't keep the point down properly when the blade is closed.

A little movement in the pivot is not going to affect how it performs at all.

Thanx for the comments. Appreciate. We've been watching the thread.

We did speak with the maker about the problems and they assure us that the balance of the run will be watched more closely.

thanks Sal. it's to do with the pivot pins IMO cos that's the way I fixed mine. It's a great cutter but I'm really looking forward to the carbon fibre ZDP and lum chinese and Endura ZDP so probably can't try another one of the Calys in the later runs :D

Real shame we can't see the FRN Caly with a screw construction rather than pins.

Hi Wayne,

We probably would not make changes to the caly jr at this time. The Caly3 is a more refined design. If we go with an FRN Caly again, we would more than likely retool and make an FRN version of the Caly3. It would have the same pivot as the G-10 / CF versions.

Hi Sal!

Thats good news for the future!

I was thinking perhaps a Caly with Frn and a steel liner somewhat like the Delica 4?

Would be an excellent budget knife.

Love the Caly 3 as well though!

I must admit, I have a grey Caly that I got from you at the IWA show years ago, I also grabbed a ZDP189 Bugandy Caly and I am about to buy a Black Caly with ZDP189 blade. I love the Caly model knife.

You know... I was thinking about something, so I went and grabbed my Jess Horn in ZPD-189... Guess what? Mine has more wobble when closed than the Caly Jr!!!

And to think all this time I should have been unhappy. ;)

Still not gonna lose sleep over it.

A FRN Caly III sounds really cool, I am really down for one of those.

That was the clip that came on the grey FRN sprint run VG-10 Caly Jrs.
Garageboy must have swapped it over.

I have two ZDP caly's, and 4 jess horns. Except for a slight uneven lamination line on one of the Horns, all of them, as well as the 4 zdp delicas and now one ZDP Endura are literally perfect. The Caly is extremely sharp, reminding me of a quality razor with which you can slice your finger accidentially and not feel it.

I have checked lockup on all. I refuse to torque on them hard enough to force wobble. The last thing I want to do is tear up a nice knife trying to find out if it's not as perfect as it seems.

Blade closed wobble is non existent on my Calys or Horns. I'd have to create it as it's not there out of the box. Joe/Raleigh

On one side the line is almost half way up the blade, on the other it is almost touching the bevel. :(

Yes, it's cosmetic - but it bothers me.
I contacted Warranty and Repair at Golden and they have offered to replace the knife.
Thumbs up for Spyderco's customer service!

Just received my #043 C52PBKE from NGK. Blade is perfectly centered, straight as an arrow, and tighter than the proverbial duck's nether regions. To frost the cake, the lamination lines on it are the most uniform of any laminated ZDP blade I've had my hands on. :D
