Memories...and I'm talking us old guys
The good ole days....
Ahhhhh MEMORIES !
Close your eyes...And go back...
Before the Internet or PC or the MAC......
Before semi-automatics and crack....
Before Playstation, SEGA, Super Nintendo, even before Atari...
Before cell phones, CD's, DVD's, voicemail and e-mail....
way back....way.....way.....way back........
I'm talkin' bout hide and seek at dusk
Red light, Green light
Red Rover...Red Rover......
Playing kickball & dodgeball until the
first...no...second...no....third
Streetlight came on
Ring around the Rosie
London Bridge
Hot potato
Hop Scotch
Jump rope
Duck....duck....GOOSE !
YOU'RE IT !
Parents stood on the front porch and yelled (or whistled) for you to
come home - no pagers or cell phones
Mother May I?
Hula Hoops
Seeing shapes in the clouds
Endless summer days and hot summer nights (no A/C) with the windows
open
The sound of crickets
Running through the sprinkler
Riding in the Way Back of the station wagon singing songs and looking
out the back window
Walking to school, to town, to the park, to the store, with your
friends
Happy Meals
Cereal boxes with that GREAT prize in the bottom
Cracker jacks with the same thing
Ice pops with 2 sticks you could break and share with a friend
....but wait.....there's more.... Watchin' Saturday Morning cartoons
Fat Albert, Road Runner, Smurfs, Picture Pages , GForce & He-Man,
Schoolhouse Rock
Watchin' Sun day morning oldies (Abbott & Costello, Three Stooges)
Wonder Woman & Super Man Underoos
FONZIE....AYYYYYYYY
Playing Dukes of Hazard
Catchin' lightning bugs in a jar
Christmas morning
Your first day of school
Bedtime Prayers and Goodnight Kisses
Climbing trees
Swinging as high as you could to try and reach the sky
Getting an Ice Cream off the Good Humor Truck
A million mosquito bites and sticky fingers
Jumpin' down the steps
Jumpin' on the bed
Pillow fights
Sleep-over?s
A 13" black and white TV in your room meant you were RICH
Runnin' till yo u were out of breath
Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt
Being tired from PLAYING
WORK: meant taking out the garbage or doing the dishes
Your first crush
Your first kiss (I mean the one that you kept your mouth CLOSED and
your eyes OPEN)
Rainy days at school meant playing "Heads up 7UP" or hangman" in The
classroom, Remember that?
Oh, I'm not finished yet....
Kool-Aid was the drink of the summer
So was a swig from the hose
Giving your friends a ride on your handlebars
Wearing your new shoes on the first day of school
Class Field Trips with soggy sandwiches
When nearly everyone's mom was at home when the k ids got there
When a quarter seemed like a fair allowance and another quarter a
MIRACLE
When ANY parent could discipline ANY kid, or feed him, or use him to
carry groceries...And nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it.
When your parents took you to McDonalds and you were COOL.
Being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate
that awaited you at home.
Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of
drive by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents
were a much bigger threat! And some of us are still afraid of em !
Didn't that feel good? Just to go back and say, "Yeah, I remember
that!"
Well, let's keep going! Let's go back to the time when...
Decisions were made by going "eeny-eeny-miney-mo"
Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "do over!"
"Race issues" meant arguing about who ran the fastest.
Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in "monopoly"
Catching fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening
It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends.
Being old, referred to anyone over 20.
The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties.
Nobody was prettier than Mom
Scrapes and bruises were kissed by mom or grandma and made better
It was a big deal to finally be tall enough to ride the "big people"
rides at the amusement park.
Gettin g a foot of snow was a dream come true..
Abilities were discovered because of a "doubledog-dare"
Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.
The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.
Water balloons were the ultimate, ultimate weapon.
Older siblings were your worst tormentors, but also your fiercest
protector
If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED!...Doc :D

Hi Doc,
Thanks for the memories. Yup, I guess I "lived". I still remember when people were leaving the bottles of milk in front of their doors for the milkman. Once a month, near the bottle(s) there were also the money for the next month milk. And no one even thought of stealing them. I remember when the wood in our neighbourhood was so think one could lose its way there if he / she didn't follow the path. And I remeber when every man or boy (and sometimes girl)
carried a foldeing knife and no one though it was odd.

Aloha SSifu,
Oh man, I am definitely one of the "old guys". :p However, you forgot playing with Stretch Armstrong...SLIME with Worms...the premier of Star Wars...and please don't say that I was the only one who wanted to order them Roman Soldiers in the covers of the comic books!
Good to know there are a few who can relate to "those days"...better still, good to know those who will admit it!
God bless ya old fellers... :)

Here's a couple more that you might be old enough to remember.
TV sets with ROUND picture tubes. Watching Howdy Doody, Roy Rogers, Gene Autrey, Andy's Gang, Crusader Rabbit, and Bubble & Squeak.

Sure sure, you geriatric folk had it much better back in the simple days of yore... I'll take pong and laser tag over hot potato and hopscotch any day of the week though.
And really? No race issues "back in the day"? :p :p

Yeah...I recall hearing about them things...while I was still in my mom's tummy that is! :D Just kidding bro!
Since we're talking TV, what about them old Hammer films with Christopher Lee, and even older still, killer flicks like, "Ann of a Thousand Days" and here it comes, "Wuthering Heights"? When HBO first came out and showed the Exorcist  , The Electric Company that had Morgan Freeman as a Dracula, (No, I will not even bring up Morpheus from The Matrix being Cowboy Curtis in Pee Wee's Playhouse  ...besides, that show was not an "old days" show). Comic racks in supermarkets that actually had a good variety of comics...or folding the back cover of MAD Magazine to see what other picture it hid?
This is great! Shows I too, resemble "that remark"! :)
God bless and thanks for the help!

I remember when TV sets didn't have a picture tube, only speakers. Way back then they were called radios

The first TV show I can remember was "The Adventures of Red Ryder" They made several pilots but it never made it to "series" status.

A Better Time when Johnny Cash was President
Well Doc I can certainly relate with a lot of your littany about "days gone by". I can very vividly remember after school was out in the afternoons when I was 13 to 18 years old I would take either my .22 cal rifle or my 20 gauge shotgun and walk through the edge of the town I lived in to some timber just outside the city limits that was owned by a friend of my dad's to go hunting. The town cop would only stop me to see what I had baged that day and to ask me if I had seen any quail that day on my visit to the woods. On a couple of occasions he even drove me home. But now I am sure that they would call a SWAT TEAM if I was to do that
I can also remember when a couple of guys threw some rocks and broke out a couple of windows at the school. That was considered one of the worst crime waves to ever hit our little town and the old folks talked about it for five years. When they caught the culprits no one wanted to throw them in jail but rather every dad in town wanted to give them a horrible whipping instead. One of the guys did get it pretty bad from his own dad  Plus both guys were made to pay for the glass and the labor to install it and got other punishments as well.
I didn't even hear about drugs or anything of the like until I was about a Junior in High School. Back then if you could get an adult to buy you a 6 pack of beer or a box of cigars you were considered to have had great connections  . If you were out smooching with a girl and could get her bra off that was considered quite a trophy :D . Probably at that time the most risky and exciting thing to do in the entire town was to go to the POOL HALL and get into a fist fight on a Friday or Saturday night. Then the following weekend you would end up going fishing with the guy you were fighting with. Yep Norman Rockwell could have sure painted pictures of our home town.

I Remember...
Dear Friends,
Yes, I too remember those days.
Playing in tree houses - mine was like a second home.
Assembling plastic models before anyone though that huffing the glue might be fun.
Riding a one-speed, one-kid-power bicycle with coaster brakes.
Half a dozen large cardboard boxes, one of Mom's serrated steak knives and a roll of masking tape could entertain you for days.
Actually reading a book before bed.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Doc.

i remember the first bike I got with coaster brakes. Man was I in heaven!!
Gosh, what has the world turned into? Just one large computer factory spitting out everything electronic we can make.

Great memories you brought back, Doc.
As I approach my 40s, those days of playing out "till the street lights come on", endless hours of ball hockey in the winter, summers spent on the farm 'working' with my uncle and grandfather, definitely special.
The good old days ain't quite what they used to be... :o

Ah Doc, that felt good!! You have brought back many happy memories and thoughts!! Those were the good old days. There sure were A LOT less worries then!! I can't even start to express how much I wish those were still the days that we were raising our children in!!
One of favorite memories was going into town on Saturday night to my grandparents home. We would get a empty A & W 1 gallon jug and take it down to A & W, have it filled and go back to their place and have Root Beer floats. YUMMY, that was fun!
Thanks, Ron

Actually "ront" we had a Root Beer stand ourselves that was really collosal. We had a Root Beer Stand in our town called "Dog N Suds". That was our official hang out for years. The food was really excellent too.ront wrote:Ah Doc, that felt good!! You have brought back many happy memories and thoughts!! Those were the good old days. There sure were A LOT less worries then!! People claim I'm nuts when I make the assertion that even the old, original McDonalds hamburgers was actually really good at one time. The old GOLDEN ARCH Stands they had (before they turned it into a place where you could eat inside) truly had some delicious hamburgers.
Granted all of that took place when the Pterodactyls where still flying in our skies :D But a time I long for none the less
