[quote="The Deacon"]Doc, you surprised me. I'd have guessed your answer would have been "whichever ten I happen to have on me at the time." ]

Well Paul I do carry other knives than those made by Spyderco  ...my bad :o but I do carry most of those on my list at one time or another or for that matter all of them at once....Doc :D

Hi Doc,
This is a tough question. Although I have more than ten spydies, I never carried them long enough to see how they'd perform in an SD situation. Besides, I don't know much about SD either :o
But I do have an Adventura with me almost all the time. As an old (non Spyderco) advertisment used to say: "its recurved blade is suitable for covert deanimation of bodies, the swedge allows a deep penetration and the strategically placed vents ensure an efficient blood drainage" :p ;)
The mind commands the body and it obeys. The mind orders itself and meets resistance.

Of course you do!!

Just curious, does that mean you just never had the opportunity arise to use a knife in SD (which is good, of course)?

Or does that mean you are so lucky that you are constantly getting new Spyders, thus changing your EDC so often that you wouldn't have the same knife on you if needed for SD? :D

Alex;I am finding this to be true...don't get me wrong I'm not willing to let my wharncliffe blades go by the way-side just yet...but I am increasingly becoming impressed with what a recurve can do as far as SD mode...Doc :D

SD for me

Post by JD Spydo »

This one really took some thought. The first five are a slam dunk. But the bottom 5 might be debatable and/or replacable pending new models.

#1 > Massad Ayoob
#2 > Matriarch
#3 > Captain
#4 > C-46 Lum Tanto folder
#5 > Civilian
#6 > Trailing Point Lil Temperance
#7 > Yojimbo
#8 > Ronin
#9 > Spyderhawk
# 10 > Chinook III

I would surely put the Gunting in there but I have not received Training for that knife yet. I would also put the Superhawk in there if it were here already. I just know in my gut that it is going to be the premier hawkbill. Now as far as a little blade candidate I would have to go with the Dodo. Well that paints a picture of what I look for in an SD Knife.

Oh OK some of you highly disagree with my choice of the C-111 Captain. But I can assure you that it is Spyderco's best "SLASHER" up till now. Well DOC you really got a good discussion going here ;)

Also not in order.
Ronin
Yojimbo
Chinook ( all)
Temp
Lil' Temp
ATR ( all)
Police
Millie ( all)
R2
Stretch

Some of these are sleepers. I intentionally wanted to pick models not as obviously MBC dedicated. The blade designs of the R2 and stretch for instance would be much better than many might imagine. A good grip is a vital, necessessary, and very important feature. From the law enforcement perspective some would be amazed how many of the "stabbers" get sliced by their own knives when their hand slides up onto the blade. Not something I'd want in a knife as sharp as a spydie, nor would I want to swap blood with the average predatory criminal. Most are walking disease bags. These cuts are often to the bone and without a good surgeon loss of some or most use and feeling can occur from these type cuts. Rehab has to be followed up , etc.

It happened to a relative of mine. He partialy lost use in two fingers and it was a knife I bought him too :( Joe

TheMAstiff, I noticed you listed all ATR's.. I wonder if you would be concerned about the grip on these SS and Ti handled blades?

I don't have a ti ATR yet. I have about 15 Ti handled other knives and find it gives me a better grip than SS typically. As it is I have no trouble with the grip on the SS ATR like I do with an unmodified Police ( I use skateboard tape on mine). I wouldn't expect to have trouble with the Ti version if I don't the SS. 2)Ronin
3)Gunting
4)Karambit
5)Waved Endura/Delica
6)Military
7)Chinook(Whatever model)
8)Adventura(Big Sleeper in the SD realm)
9)Police
10)Persian Full Size

This is hard to ask as many of you some will change possibly as time passes or other models come. Doc the recurve will continue to grow on you knifebro. The Pikal model to come and a few others current or past could easily be added into the top 10 catagory......The Yo stays period! :D

After following this thread from its inception, rereading the rules of the topic, and with careful top secret methodology I've determined the following list:
Ronin
Ronin
Ronin
Ronin
Kumo
Yojimbo
Chinook
Manix
Lil Temperence
Temperence
:D

Important considerations: If you actually train with a knife, which knife you choose makes little difference...as long as the frickin lock does its job it shouldn't much matter. A fixed blade's lock is always better than a folder's.

Of equal importance is retention, as one whose hands sweat more than average, I know what moisture can do...especially if you don't practice that grip as you slam you knife into a Bob, heavy bag, stack of cardboard, or denim-ed meat..not to mention the perp(s). If I could brand the Temperance's slickery frn and make it more like a proper volcano grip texture it would rocket much higher on the list.

The ergos of the Manix and the Lil T are both good for work but seem a bit busy (manix) or too wide for natural retention (Lil T) for SHTF to be higher on the list.

Secondary consideration is ease of carry/conceal-ability. Now the Ronin is not easier to carry than a Yojimbo, but no lock to worry about and no blade to open outweigh that consideration. But the Ronin carries easier than a Kumo or a Little T. Now no one can really complain about carry if they are serious. Doc Snub. and at least one other forumite routinely carry 10 knives daily. Carrying one or two is not any sort of burden, is much lighter than one pistol and should be part of the daily routine...just like wallet, phone, keys...the daily tools needed for the modern hunter/gatherer.

So in summary Fixed blade>retention>ease of carry...but then we have to consider local laws :(

I've recently changed my carry to Yojimbo for that which we strive to never hope to see and waved Delica for day to day chores. Now let us all bow our heads and consider nested liners in volcano gripped FRN.

Really I don't care about the make and model as long as the blade is vorpal razor sharp. I'm more slashy rather than stabby in my knife training so I'm not trying to hit the heart or spinal cord or other deep targets that require long blades for instant stops. YMMV.
