I'm glad the kid in the video had the initiative to do that. He makes some very good points about some of the more ridiculous aspects of this situation.

Looking at some of his non-verbal communication and influctuations in his voice, I'm guessing it's all made up. He rarely looks at the camera, and looks to the left and down a lot. I'm guessing he's just trying to raise a ruckuss, which he is doing fairly well. His background of the story seems to point to the fact that he's just pulling it out of his butt as well. I personally wouldn't take what he said with a grain of salt.

Always had a knife with me, just once was confiscated and given back to my mother at the end of school year. We had batons, knuckles and tear gas sprays too - other guys from grade. I guess nowadays kids do the same.

I remember back in my more destructive days when I was about 10 or so, I cut off a piece of fence wire with my scissors (which is the only thing in my pencil case to have stayed intact since primary school), and made tiger claws with it. And sharpened it on the concrete, as well :o . That got confiscated (and rightly so, now that I look back on it), but all that happened was the principal and I had a bit of a chat about such things.

This, however, is a joke, either on the state of things at the moment, or on those who believe it. Problem is, I'm not sure which, and I can see either case being perfectly true .

Well, on the one hand, I'm opposed to "zero tolerance" rules in schools, regardless of wether its knives, drugs, or fighting involved. On the other, in every school system I have any knowledge of, these rules are published, mailed to parents, covered in assemblys on or before the first day of classes every year, and printed copies are handed to each student as well, so there is really no valid excuse for not following such a rule if it exists.

There are several of this young man's statements that make me suspicious. First, the assertion that lots of other children in the school were carrying knives. That just does not seem consistent with the times and the climate.

Second, the allegation that the child was orginally charged, or threatened with being charged, with a felony. To the best of my (admittedly limited) legal knowledge, there is no place in the US where simple possession of a 1" knife is a felony. More importantly, a felony is an adult charge and I know of no state where a child of 11 or 12 can be tried as an adult for anything except a violent felony. They would be handled as a juvenile, and charged with juvenile delinquency.

So am not sure how much of his story to believe.

But apart from (stupid or not) school rules about knives, what became of just confiscating the knife and writing a letter to the parents?

On the other hand I applaud that, after all the efforts to make the rest of the world absolutely safe, steps are taken inside the US. Next: padding on the sidewalks and buildings without sharp corners. :D

One further observation. In New York at least, there are two types of suspension, in-school and out-of-school. ISS is like detention during regular school hours, and the child is tutored and expected to keep up with their classwork. Any child in OSS for more than a day or two is entitled to be tutored at home tutor at the school system's expense. They are not only allowed, but expected, to keep up with their classwork. NO child receiving either type of suspension is forced to fail a grade, although many may fail because the majority of kids who get suspended are basically troublemakers with no interest in learning who have figured out they can avoid school by getting themselves suspended for disruptive behavior.

It is my understanding, perhaps mistaken, that these rules are driven by federal "no child left behind" mandates. If that is the case then I would think most, if not all, other states would have similar rules.

I've got a friend who went to the same high school as me 10-12 years ago, and he carried an Emerson (I think) from 7th grade until he graduated.

When I was in 3rd grade I used to always carry a very Small Sak to school, some kid on my class was trying to steal my gameboy out of my bookbag, while we were in class. the teacher stepped outside to talk to another teacher. While stealing my gameboy he found my sak, left it there took the gameboy, at the end of the day he yelled Vinnys got a knife and the teacher like ran at me and grabbed me and my bad and took me out to the principles office. I went n that It was just a knife always had in my bag, everyday from 1st grade when i started camping and I just always had it. I got suspended for 2 full school weeks, thats 10 days off of school. I did get the knife back and guess what the thing went right back in my bag. Now the kid who stole my game boy had nothing done to him and they just said to give it back to me, as it didn't belong in school. It was total BS but i got 2 weeks off from school and my mother fought and got it removed from my record.


Thats not the only time i go suspended, one time while in 5th grade, we every year the 1-5grades would have a Halloween parade with the costumes in the school yard. I was a soldier that year and had a camo vest with a radio and all, I also at a flea market bought a hallowed out dud grenade from this old veteran for like $8,my mom bought it for me and thought it would be great for the costume. I wore it attached to the vest just like they really do. i thought I had the coolest costume, which i did. Had a Rubber m16 trainer also. I was the **** that year. i ended up getting suspended because they considered a dud hollowed out grenade a weapon. Now sure it was heavy and looked real, but it was as harmless as a rock with a leaver. They were not mad about the m16 trainer, thats looked authentic, they suspended me for 3 days and well it was a nice vacation with a ton of candy.

The 3rd time i got suspended for bringing a nudy magazine to school that me and my friend marchello found behind a super market, as well as a week before bringing one of those little escort service papers I found on the floor. I got in trouble as I pretended to casually read it in class. This was a in school suspension, so not that bad and no record.

The 4th time was due to a fight because some guy called my mom a c*nt when she was picking me up from school and I beat the crap out of him. This was a 3 day.





I think all of these were a little obsessive, but Im proud of the, and well they arent on my record anymore as My mom got them off, so all is well. so I can relate to this story/
