Until you can get a trainer, try putting tape on the knife... At least until you are comfortable with it.

:spyder: NGK sells a bali trainer for ten bucks. Mastering the balisong by Michael Janich is as good as it gets. :spyder:

+1 on balisong xtreme. Great website and it's free. Just make sure you don't rely to much on tape or a trainer. It can become a crutch and screw you over more when you move to a live blade. I didn't tape, and got cut a few times, but I respect the knife very much so. I'd say leave the knife untaped, and if you run into something that is to hard and you keep getting cut, then tape it up to learn the move and go back to a live blade. Just my opinion though.

Yet another second on foregoing the blade tape... you are just putting off getting a few love bites until you can spin it fast enough to do some real damage. Remember this important equation (assuming you have a standard rig on your bali... I forget if it is batangas or not... but the punch line goes that the latch is on the bite handle), bite handle+you holding it=your blood everywhere... safe handle+your hand=butterflies and rainbows (the straight kind). Also... aerial openings+unseasoned flipper=emergency knife from foot extraction at your local emergency room. Have fun!
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Do not tape the blade, and do not go to any Bali websites for at least a week. Just flip until you get the weight down, than start doing tricks.

Take it slow, and master what you can do before you move on.

Have Band-Aids, antiseptic, and neosporin on hand.

Don't flip barefoot.

I'm sure theres more, but that's all I could come up with right now. :p

started playing with a cheap chinese trainer.... live blade, but poor enough steel that it didn't break skin the few times I screwed up, just gave me a nice reminder when I had a red mark or ding on my hands.

went all out, picked up a good one, and have yet to draw blood flipping it myself (though 2 of the 3 ppl that have asked if they could try have cut themselves on it :p :D ). gotta love 'dexterity trainers' ;)

Best instructional DVD for the butterfly knives is Michael Janich's "Mastering the Balisong" from Paladin Press. Two hours of front, side, overhead, and slo-mo veiws of every kind of manipulations you can think of, including airiels and doubles. Very well done!!!

Zenghost's site doesnt have as many instructionals as balisongextreme, but his vids show full-speed, then slow, then full again, with lots of explanation. Hope you find it useful.
