What was your first knife?

The title's quite self-explanatory. What was your first knife? Why did you have it? When? Do you still own it?



My first was a classic 4-blade Scout knife when I joined Boy Scouts. A simple utility knife, that little piece has served me well for years, and started me on the path to <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>Holism.



I still have it, and still carry it. It's a bit worn at the edges, and the belly's starting to wear flat, but it keeps on cutting.

The first one that I can really remember was a K-Bar that my dad got for me from the Air Force base PX.

My first folding knife was a Buck "Selector" and a 110.. <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I still have them in my drawer.. My first Spyderco knife was a C-17 Catcherman in AUS-8.. The first 2 or 3 knives I can remember buying for myself were all Buck 110 cheep copies. Nearly 30 years later I still have one on the desk in front of me, although these days it is relagated to being the test for new sharpening techniques.

I've never owned a real Buck, but the more I look at this cheep copy the more I'm tempted to buy the real deal just for old times sake <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> They do quite a nice 110 with a BG42 blade and a choice of handle materials.

good old fashioned four blade scout knife. i still have it but due to the repeated "sharpenings" i gave it when i was younger i dont think it would cut butter anymore. could sharpen it now but i like keepin it like that. kinda a momento

small(now) Sheffield slipjoint, made in the early 50s(checked on the collectors forum at BFC).

My grandfather gave it to me as a 5th Bday gift. Taught me how to sharpen and care for a knife, using that one. Got it in '89, and was hooked.

Still have it tucked away.

My first knife was a cheap non locking folder. The SS handles had the shape of a fish - with eyes, tail, scales, everything. I guess I lost it or it was stolen from me <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I'd buy another one if I'd find such a model, just for memorabilia purposes)<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

This is a longgggggggggggggg time ago :-) for me 40 yrs.
But i believe it was an old 2 bladed pine knot, or a Boker 2 bladed pill buster. Ron

Mine was a two bladed pocket knife, had bone scales, given to me by my grandfather when I was 7 or eight years old. He taught me how to take care of it too, and to respect it as a tool. Of course back then I used it to whittle on anything allowable - and probably on a few things that weren't <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>. It did not take me long to learn real respect for it though. I have carried a knife of some sort with me all my life. Sad to say, I don'k remember what happened to the original - I think I gave it to my brother.

a "jacknife" my father gave me when I was about nine years old. to this day I dont know exactly what constitutes a "jacknife", but thats what he called it, and I thought it was pretty cool.

A little Chinese slipjoint folder. The metal handle was shaped like a small fish <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> I was about 5 yrs old and it was a gift from my grandfather. This was 41 yrs ago, my grandfather is long gone, but I still have the knife - somewhere...

First for me was SAK Champ SOS kit (red), second was another SAK Champ SOS Kit (black), always kept one in vehicle.

Then this year I got my first real knife - a Military SE, and two accessories the Spyderench, and Spydercard.

My two SAK kits got refurbished this year from SAK, to repair scissors, chipped handle on one, and upon their return I gave one to each of my godson's on their 13th birthday.

Absolute delight to see their smiles. I have never since such big grins in all my life, seeing them open up all the tools on the knife.
