Sheeple factor and knife carry

#1

Post by spydutch »

Greetings you all :)

The past few days I've "refound" my SS Police/SE again.

I would very much like to carry and use it for all my cutting chores. However, I don't think it would be much appreciated from my environment if I use that knife in public.
In the Netherlands the Police is still legal to carry because it's total length doesn't exceed 28 cm.

So just to keep the non knife people happy, I'll just carry a smaller knife instead despite the fact I would like to carry my Police :( .

So my question is; how much do you all let the "sheeple factor" dictate you knife carry?

I would very much like to know.

I usually carry a sheeple knife for occasion when I need to use one around the sheeple.
First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Non knife people

#4

Post by UK KEN »

Friends

I thought we'd got away from the term "sheeple". I do not care in the slightest about political correctness but why alienate potential converts to the brotherhood of the knife by using derogatory terms to describe them?

Anyway, in the UK when I carry any knife I am aware of the people around me (knife people or not) and try not to be too flamboyant when I either deploy or use it. I don't particularly care what they think about me carrying or using a knife but why create potential adverse reactions.

I also try to bare in mind that "Joe Public" may not be fully aware of the UK carry laws. You'd be amazed by the number of people who think that all knife carry in the UK is illegal. I tend to select my knife/knives at the beginning of the day based on what I intend to do and where I will be going. I know where you are coming from, we shouldn’t have to think like this but for me it makes life easier all round.

Regards, Ken

For what it's worth, I currently carry some pretty formidable blades on my person. This is mostly due to the fact that I live and attend graduate school in one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. (Baltimore, MD). Currently, I carry a Cold Steel Voyager with a fully serrated five inch tanto blade, a Serrated Spyderco A.T.R., a fully serrated Endura 3 (left ankle), a fully serrated Tasman Salt (small of back), a SS harpy (appendix carry), and a small fixed blade (2.5 inch blade) SOG Topo Contour (cross-draw). I also have a Victorinox Soldier model in a Cordura pouch, and two 3 oz. canisters of O.C. (one Foam, one Fogger). So, to answer your question, what I carry does not get influenced by the sheeple factor. However, I am sure to carefully conceal all of my "gear" at all times, and if I should need to cut something in public (most likely at my University), then the Victorinox Soldier will probably get the assignment. I would never use my 5 inch tanto blade to cut something around sheeple, nor would I even use my fixed-blade SOG Contour, despite it's 'small' 2.5 inch blade. Those blades are reserved for the most dire circumstances. So, if the Spyderco Police is what you want to carry, and it is legal, I would not see a problem with carrying it so long as you also carry a smaller, less menacing blade to use around the general public, and you keep the Police model well hidden.
Stay safe.

[quote="spydutch"]So my question is]

Not much. My most regular carry is my Lil'Temp. It may put off some for a second (but it looks MUCH smaller in MY hand than in some others, I have to admit). And, those looks vanish once I slice though something (with NO effort) that they couldn't seem to get open. They are replaced by 'wow, what is that?'

I guess I'm not really very aware of Sh....e (how's that, Ken?) reaction as much until I have something like my Mili, but the Lil'T is just a better knife for most things I do so the Mili doesn't come out much.

I've found that NKP's are usually more 'worried' than 'scared'. I know 'what's the difference'? Still, 'worried' means that one can be educated. I definitely have a few knives especially suitable for NKP education, also because I like them; don't get me wrong. People don't know the law and are worried you've got something illegal. The Kopa is a good nkp knife, the Kiwi is good too. For the really uninitiated, a Jester/Victorinox Classic SD is suitable. Once they've learned that good knives can be pretty, ingenious designs, and that knife collecting can be a legitimate (though 'weird') hobby, the acceptance of my preferred 3 inch blades is not far away. It helps that I have a 'dressed up' keychain with a prybaby and Arc AAA Premium, and a cellphone that's much more 'advanced' than other's. I'm 'gadget guy' rather than 'freaky knife guy'. :D

Standard rules for first time knife showing is to slowly take the folder out and open it with two hands. Nothing jumps NKP's more than a knife popping out from nowhere. :D

Now days I usually carry something in the 3 in. blade range. Not trying to be PC but the 3 in. just works better for me. Still does everything I need done with a knife.

dude 8 knives    thats a wee bit much, dont you think? even when i was a cop in the projects in chicago i only had a gun, a :spyder: and my baton. (true i had 46 bullets on me, but still) do you make it a habit to travel in the crappiest part of town with a ton of bling showing? why do you need that many knives at once? a mugger would probably back off with just one knife pulled out and i realize you have them in different spots if he incapacitates you some how but i think left/right pocket and ankle is more than adequate for almost anything arising. anybody else meaning you harm will most likely have a gun, and you know the line by sean connery about bringing a knife to a gun fight. if a cop does frisk you, for whatever reason, you will be going to jail with that many knives. i dont care if it gets thrown out but they will get confiscated and you will waste a better part of a day in the lockup. just my opinion.
as for the original question i carry a manix at work (firehouse) and a caly3 off duty. a cricket is also on my keychain.

My friends give me a bad time for carrying so many knives, most of which are definitely NKP friendly. I carry a spyderfly LF pocket clipped, swiss army knife LF loose (more key chain fob than anything), ti-lite RF pocket, swick loose in RF pocket (thinking of getting a tek-lok and putting it on a belt though), and a SE tasman Salt right hip. However, I'm always prepared for various cutting tasks. Albeit some of my knives are more for fun than use. Most people have gotten over my knives though. Now just to find the most effective way to carry/rotate...and get some OC...

But the law says you may carry a dagger if you like. do you become a none carry person because of others opinions. Just don't break the law or rules of your work place carry what you want hopfully a :spyder: and be glad you have one there for any purpose that mite come your way. :spyder:

I don't care what people think. I'll carry any knife I want to. (except when wearing a suit, then I choose something moderate and elegant :) )
But I also carry a small blade in case someone needs to borrow a knife.
NKP need to be educated - that is done best by friendly example.

Carry your beloved police and carry a smaller knife for the public. I carry 3-4 knifes most of the time pepole only see the small ones and the larger models i have stay hidden away from the knp. Even though a small knife is more for them to be scared of because they would never know it was there till the final moment. :spyder:

Not much really, but I carry 3 inchers most of the time.
But that is because they suit my cutting needs best.
Indeed, nobody seem to know the law overhere, not even security personal.

I got a new one to tell when someone starts about knives, dangerous, stabbing, etc.
I ask if they also start nagging to a classic car owner about the 800 or so people getting killed in traffic each year in our country.
It works quite well.

Howdy Arend! :)

I would carry what the law allows, not worring about the sheeple factor. I stopped worrying about what most people feel and think a long time ago, don't ever let someone elses fears drag you down.

So my humble opinion is:

:spyder: Carry that Police with Spyderco pride!. :spyder:

I think this is the main reason why there is a need to keep a small knife to use in public, and keep your SD knife hidden at all times. Some cops don't care what the law is, they will arrest you anyway. I have a great respect for the good police officers, and the law itself. But I have no respect for the cops that think they are above the law, and see the people as their enemy.

Also, there are some people that make me a bit worried when I see that they have a knife. Especially if I'm already uneasy about them. But I actually feel more safe and secure, when I know good people around me have a nice SD knife when needed. Especially a :spyder: ..... :D

I used to be excited to show my new knives to friends, but no more. Especially here in CA. There are many people who see a knife as just a weapon, not as a tool. They fear the knife and the person who carries it.

Freaking out sheeple is not on my daily agenda so I carry my big blade IWB or in a kydex ankle holster. My Dragonfly is my public use folder. Even rabid sheeple accept the D'fly.
