The Ultimate Knife

#1

Post by Firefighter880 »

So here's a question I'm really looking forward to getting responses from. I think everybody can benefit from this. I know that when I am looking to buy a new knife, I want one that appeals to me, but I also tend to go for one that I have read good reviews for/ heard good things about from other people.

So with that said....

You've been given an ultimatum that you can only carry ONE knife for the rest of your life. This knife must be used for a variety of tasks and be able to hold up to all of them. The knife should be suitable for self-defense, hunting, camping, cutting through the roof of a car, fending off killer ninjas, and the like. What would you choose?

Hopefully, this will weigh on people's minds, and give us a better idea of what to look for when purchasing our next knife.

(I'm holding back to answer my own question until I receive my Manix in the mail)

On a different note, what are your opinions of the new Spyderco Lava? It looks cool, sturdy, and easily concealable. Looks to be a good back-up knife...

If I were to be restricted to only one knife for the rest of my life, it would only need to be long enough, sharp enough and strong enough to cut my own throat with it.

There is no single knife on the face of the earth that could do everything I use a knife for. :D

Did you say one knife from here on out?

I'm carrying it right now. The Spyderco C-44 big Dyad which is a double bladed Spyderco knife that has one fully serrated blade and one great flat grind plain edge. Most of the brethren are very familiar with that blade but it bears repeating because this is a knife that you could easily get all your chores done with.

I do hope that they will bring back a new, revamped version with a better blade steel down the road. I do recommend the full sized one. The smaller one is a bit challenged with some of your more demanding jobs. But this knife is a home run over the center field wall with men on base. It's that good

Full Size Manix. If I had better elastic in my Pajamas I'd wear it ALL the time.

Wow! That's a hard question. I'm still searching for the perfect knife for myself. I really, really like my new Caly 3 and Captain, but if I had to choose just one it would probably be the 83mm Manix. I really love the strong build, handle material and steel on this knife. It is, however, a little bigger than I perfer...but if I had to choose only one this would probably be it.

There is no question that my favorite knives are made by Spyderco, but I still haven't found the absolute perfect one yet. That said, I am happy with my :spyder: cutting tools.

I'm waiting for a Spyderco/Hossom Forester - If I could only have one knife to do it all, that might be it.

OH a fixed blade?

If a fixed blade was going to be what I had to choose from it would either be a Ronin or a fixed blade Temperance. They are both just excellent, all purpose fixed blade knives ;) Great steel, really great ergonomic handles and sheaths that just flat do the job.

But on the other hand YAB really makes a great point that with all of the diverse chores that need to be done with a knife it is realistically hard to narrow it down to just one to fill all your needs.

Yep. I've tried cleaning my fingernails with a Manix, and it didn't go well  And it would take a REALLY long time to build a shelter with a C39 Dyad, Jr. The C44 Dyad is probably as close to a do everything knife as I have ever seen, but I have run across tasks that I just don't feel it is stout enough to handle. I guess that's why I usually carry about a dozen knives at a time :D

Wow, through some miracle I got my full-size Manix in the Mail today. I ordered it yesterday, standard shipping. Talk about near-instant gratification...

I LOVE this knife. Obviously, I've had it only a few hours, so I haven't yet been able to field test it or really even carry it, but it is AWESOME. Right now I'm going to go with the Manix. It's big, heavy-duty, and feels like it could cut through the side of a helicopter! This thing rocks! This is just my opinion though, as I love hefty knives that I can feel in my pocket. I know some people prefer lighter, smaller knives....

Anyway, my vote goes for the Manix.

Tough one.
Some of the uses you describe cannot be incorporated into one blade geometry, to be sure.
That said, I love my Ti ATR, that would be my best bet from the knives I own, closely followed by the Police and Ti Lum Tanto.
Apart from that, I'd probably consider the Sebenza (from Chris Reeve), Ghost Dog from Wilkins, Manix, Chinook and the Military - would have to edc them to be sure.

I'd probably choose the ATR right now. :)

I think everybody can benefit from this.
I think not, but it IS a fun question to ask.

My first real knife (i.e. not a SAK) was the manix. I chose it because i was planning to buy just one knife and no more, and wanted a multipurpose heavy duty knife. And thats what i got :)

In reality, i wanted 3 folders, 3 fixed blades, and 1 SAK. (3 = large, medium, small)
