symbiotic spydercos

ever experience the shift of the initial "so UGLY!" reaction to having that same knife grow on you until you, uh, NEED it? for me, it was the captain. when i first saw the amsterdam pictures, i laughed out loud. loudly. long story short, i ordered one today. :D

any models do that for you?

The Delica/Endura 4 never really got me visually. It was when I held one that I was converted. This happens with a lot of Spydercos, they don't really make sense untill you hold and use them.

When I first saw the Dodo, I thought "wtf?"

Now I think it's absolutely beautiful.

The Swick was like that for me. It just didn't appeal to me at all, and now it's by far the most used knife I have.

I saw the Waved Endura on NGK and thought it looked WAYYY better than the standard (I grew up with a Mariner, so I like that spine design as opposed to the Endura/Delica spine design) but when i got it, I was sort of dissapointed, also the FRN is blue. Now it's totally grown on me, and is on it's way back from STR's (thanks again man!) magical happyland.

Since I'm in the collector club, I get 'em all. There are certainly ones, even dating as far back as the Cricket and as recent as the Poliwog, which look pretty ugly at first but really grew on me.
On the other hand, I think the Kumo is a drop-dead beautiful design which has always felt strange in my hand.
Go figure.

First Impression fooled me>> Captain model

#10

Post by JD Spydo »

It was a "ditto" with me and the Captain model also. Now it is one of my top 10 favorites. When I first looked at pictures of the blade I wasn't appalled like other people I know who have previously put down the design; but I was very curious as to what a blade of that shape would be good for.

Now I will admit that I didn't at first really take to the design but this was a Spyder that I had to handle first hand. Now I want a user of it and it is high on my priority/want list.

I have learned my lesson with Spyderco as far as handling the knife in your hand before making the final decison on it. For that reason I am now looking very forward to the P'Kal.

Several similar experiences with the Captain, the D'allara Drop Point, the Assist 2, and the Spyker.......I initially found them all to be "fugly" but only after holding/using them did I come to appreciate their "inner beauty".... :D

Function over aesthetics

jaislandboy I agree with you. The Spyker was one that I had to get used to myself. It gave me a whole new perspective on "re-curves". I now want a used one in the worst way.

I think it is fair to say that a lot of Spyderco models are truly misunderstood. Actually I think their whole line up is misunderstood. What the knife buying public has to realize is that Spyderco's first objective is "function". I personally think that function is a beauty all it's own.

The Poliwog did this with me. Initial reaction: That's an UGLY knife, but as soon as i held one, it became most beautiful!

Every time I used to see the Kiwi I would think "what a stupid knife", and now I own one and plan to own more as time goes on.

The Lava is another knife that I did not like until I saw it in hand, I'll have one soon.

I like "ugly" knives. Love the Captain from the first time I saw it, same is true for the Dodo.

UGLY = Functional

But keep one big point in mind. In the case of Spyderco knives>> UGLY usually is synonymous with FUNCTION.

The P'Kal is surely going to be interesting in that regard ;)

what most people think is "Ugly" is just "Unfamiliar". Being a designer many/most of Spyderco knives despite being very functional also have many strong visual design aesthetics. I think though in the knife world the product they often make is so far removed from what is "Normal" that those well steeped in the knife community see them as "Ugly" because they are "Abnormal".

The easiest parallel to this is music. A lot of music out there is crafted with extraordinary skill yet to those unfamiliar with the genre will just sound like random noise.
