Let me add two Steve's:

Steve Hackett (used to play in Genesis)
Steve Howe (Yes)

I once visited one of the solo gigs of Steve Hackett in Holland. The man came on stage did between 50 and 100 push ups, took his guitar, sat down, played the whole concert (classical spanish guitar), and never spoke a word to the audience!!!!!
After the concert I got an autograph from his partner/wife(?), the lovely Kim Poor! She's an artist who did a lot of albumcover art for his albums and also for Genesis and other famous bands.
I'll never forget that 'special' night!

Both fine guitar players.

You guys are hitting some of the greats for sure. Some of you have probably already heard of him, but many probably don't know of Jimmy Herring. The live Aquarium Rescue Unit with col. Bruce is one of my favorites.

For me,
David Gilmour, SRV, Carlos Santana, Mark Knophler. They are all great on disk but the only real way to have them blow your mind is and was live...

Brian May for sure, Ottmar Leibert, and I've kind of been partial to George Thorogood.

Hi Allen.
Tough question here, as there are many of them: Carlos Santana, Gary Moore (I was surprised no one mentioned him) and let's not forget the good old J.L. Hooker. But I'm particulary fond of a guitarist named Al di Meola. Perhaps he is not very popular in the US, I don't know, but if you have the chance, you may want to listen him, I guess some of you might like it ;)

[quote="DAYWALKER"]Aloha Allen,

Easy one: Bass guitar would be our very own Hannibal Lecter. ]

Hi Chad, this was a sweet one. I guess I can play with my acoustic and you can take your own electric guitar (Fender Stratocaster) ;) With Doc as a bassist we can make a band. I mean, there is Guns'n Roses, why shouldn't be Knives'n Guitars?

My all time favorite guitarists are Andres Segovia and Carlos Montoya. Of the rock guitarists, I'd have to rate Eric Clapton as the best.

Being that I'm mostly a Jazz guy, I'd have to include Django Reinhardt, a guy with only two working fingers on his left hand, the others having been badly disfigured and rendered unusable in a fire. He could do more with his limited digits, than most could do with all they were born with.

Frank Gambale is another favorite of mine.

On bass guitar, there was nobody like Jaco Pastorius. Jaco played with so many, including Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny.

I would say that today’s equal to Jaco is Jimmy Haslip of the Yellowjackets. He has played with hundreds of artists as a session player when his particular sounds were needed.

GronK wrote:The best, in my opinion, actually employed some of the above mentioned guitar heroes in his group. Satriani and Vai, if I recall correctly.

Anyone care to guess? (Hint in my sig)

Shut up and play your guitar!
