BG-42 Military? Any other new knives I missed?

#1

Post by Sid Post »

I just read a review of a new Military in BG-42 blade steel but, when I looked on the Spyderco website I did not see it listed. Is this a brand new model and the website hasn't been updated or, is it new "old" stock?

What other knives have BG-42 blade steel? Are other blade steels available that aren't listed on the main website? If so, which models are they used in?

Thanks!

The knife is not old, most likely the website has not been updated. To my knowledge, the Military is the only Spyderco so far to use BG-42. I believe that the knife is a testbed to see if there is enough interest in the steel from the ELU.

It is a Sprint Run, so check out (or download) the catalog supplements that have the sprint runs on them.

You can find it here:

I have one the way (CF Military BG-42) it should be here by mid week I hope. :)

The BG-42 Military is a sprint run, I believe NGK still has a bunch in stock. As far as I know, this is the only Spyderco with this steel so far. It is good stuff, just keep it away from hard things. I was shaving down a rafter to fit an exhaust fan, and found a finish nail I didn't see. :o The edge didn't nick, it chipped big time. Took half an hour on the DMT medium diamond bench stone to get the edge back in shape.
BG-42 and ZDP189 (both solid and laminated) are the current sprint run steels, and the ZDP should find its' way into regular production soon.

There were two Spydies done with BG-42 BS. The current Military model and the original 30 or so Spyderco Wegner green Ocelot prototypes that were sold through Blade Art.

Not to get too off-topic, but what do I have to do to get one of those green prototype Ocelots? (Yes, I know, it involves my checkbook and a certain amount of foolishness....)

lurk on knives forums everyday, save a big pile of cash (around 400-500$ IIRC) and cross your fingers that you'll be the first to call it. :)

That's pretty much how I lucked into this one. I got up at 5:00am EDT, tuned into Blade Forums and there it was. It had been posted late at night west coast time. I do remember having to take a couple of big deep breaths regarding the $$$ before I sent the ole "I'll take it".. :D
