Growing number of Spydermen

#1

Post by golok »

I have noticed this phenomenon for some time now.

Spyderco must have the biggest bunch of loyal supporters compared to the other brands.

I have yet to come across anybody saying anything negative about Spyderco. This alone must surely be a bonus, to say the least.

At first glance, I must admit Spyderco does not have a tidal wave effect but it does grow on a person.

Anybody who has at least one Spyderco swears by it. This brings to mind what does Spyderco do that is so different from the others.

I have been scratching my head over this for some time now. On the surface, I don't see anything extraordinary but Spyderco owners keep cropping up wherever I go.

I go to the movies and there it is. I watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and that Wolf boy Oz whips one out. Then I ask: "How come they don't use another knife?"

What is that elusive Spyderco charm? What is it one special quality that makes it stand head and shoulders above all the others?

Ahhh mistique is forever undefined. If you could define it - it wouldn't be mystical anymore, yes? ;-)

Toolin - I guess we're the underdog? So what if we(!) don't winner awards. Doesn't it make you feel good to believe in a worthy cause? =)

Here's to mystery, beauty, and use.

I guess Spyderco challenges SOME people.
IMO-- Spyderco not recieving all kinds of awards is only a manifestation of how far Spyderco really is ahead of the rest. When spyderco comes out with something so cutting-edge(like usual) SOME people dont understant it enough to give it an award untill, another manefacture decides to imulate spyderco 50 million years later.
By then they will understant it enough to give an award to another manefacture.

Sal could sedition JUST A LITTLE!!!! LOL

If you want a bad word about Spyderco, the best I can say is that they are addictive.

I would also say that they are an aquired taste. For years I resisted the temptation of getting one, didn't like the look of their classic wedged shaped blade. Then I relented and got one, I've bought several since and have carried one every day.

Spyderco's customer service and the great advice on this forum don't hurt either.

I remember seeing an article in Blade last year that said that Spyderco has won a Blade magazine "Knife of the Year" award nine times. You've got to admit that's a pretty amazing number.

Probably at least one reason why I personally like Spyderco is that they don't advertise the fact that they've won awards to hype their knives. Spyderco lets you decide whether or not their knives are good or bad. They don't try to claim that their knives are the official knives of Navy SEALS, or that they have the strongest lock known to man, or that they can stab through a car door without incurring any damage, or whatever. It's just refreshing to see a product advertised without any gimmicks.

many years ago I looked at Spyderco products. I personally don't like lockback knifes and at that time it was all I could find. I ended up purchasing my first "good" knife as a Benchmade. I beat the **** out of it and it is now retired. I then purchased a Spyderco "Wayne Goddard" and wasn't all that impressed with it. Well, after starting to get into knifes I purchased a Viele with Spyderedge, I never base my opinion on just one model from a maker. I have to say this knife is probably the best knife I own at the current time bar none!!! I have a Civilian on order right now for the looks and to carry on Duty.
I plan on ordering several liner lock Spydies in the next several months. I have on my "wish" list the Viele straight edge, the Lum Tanto, and a Shabaria and Herbst.
I prefer better scales like G-10 or Micarta as opposed to the FRN but that's a cosmetic thing. I don't think Spyderco has anything to appologise for as far as quality goes. I think it is the equal or better to any other production knife in ANY price point.
And my understanding is that the customer service is second to none.
