Native > Lil'T !?

#1

Post by sprokker »

The Native is the most ergonomic knife I have ever held. It keeps bumping nice knives that cost 3 times more out of my pocket.

The big plusses are: comfy, full 4-finger grip (using choil), thin & light in the pocket, one hand opening & closing, dropped-point S30V.

But I would sure like it better if it had lined G10 scales instead of FRN, and screw construction instead of pins. Any chance it'll be upgraded in this way in the future?

Any other Spydercos I should be looking at until that glorious day?

Mini manix/full size manix, I like the mini alot better. Or lil' temp (looks like you already thought about that one :) ) If you need somthing that will take a very severe beating and will still love you at the end of the day, I'd go for either of these great knives. I EDC a mini manix and it reminds me quite a bit of my native (I too love the ergoes on that knife) and although I've never used a lil' temp I understand that they're simply wonderful knives. I say flip a coin on this one :D

The Mini Manix is a good knife and sort of like a Native in ergos and such, but significantly heavier. Have you considered the Paramilitary? It's a bit bigger overall but is closer to the Native in terms of weight.

Wasn't there a run of G-10 natives for BF?
Edit: Actually it would appear there were a few runs of G-10 natives...

Those are gorgeous, ruxton! What do they typivcally cost? Anyone know a place that has a G10 sprint native in stock?

How does the Mini Manix compare in size to the Native? Both pocket-feel and hand-feel are important to me

I have a Lil'T, and while the knife is superb in the hand, I personally find it too large in the pocket. It's not the weight, it's the bulk, the thickness and the width of the handles..

Well, considering the number of Sprint Runs Spyderco has been doing recently, another run of G-10 Natives can't be ruled out. But, on the other hand, none has been announced yet either and there is no guarantee one ever will.

Of the existing G-10 Natives, only the blue ones are all screw construction. The pair with the inlays have a screw for the blade pivot, but rivets for the lockbar pivot and backspacer pins. The blue ones can be found both with, and without, the forum engraving, but none of them show up very often and when they do run from around $125 for the SE version with the "root beer" inlay to over $200 for the PE blue.

An alternative worth considering would be to have an FRN Native customized by STR, one of the members of this forum. Advantage of that are that it would be S30V steel (assuming you sent a reasonably new Native), titanium liners (the factory ones are unlined), your choice of color for the G-10, and you could have it set up for which ever carry mode you prefer TU/TD RH/LH.

STR dosn't work with G-10 due to it's caustic nature. or so i have been told.

Many of your are comparing the mini-manix to the native, but they are quite different to me. The difference is in the overall size and weight. There are few things I would perfer to a native with nested liners inside g10. I have the Paramilitary, but the handle is a bit too long to suit me. Also, I used to like the compression lock best of all, but lately I've been moving back towards the back-lock. I do like open construction, but that doesn't fit with the back-lock.

A native in g10..... :D :D :D

The Native? I'd settle for construction like the D & E 4's. FRN, liners, and screws. Throw in a sprint of that ZDP stuff :) , now we're talking. Make a helluva good knife better.

Have to agree with Deacon and Mr.Blonde . Since you are not happy with a Temp the Mini Manix sadly would not be your cup of tea . as said by Deacon , STR can set you up with a beautiful Native upgrade ( correct , no G-10 , health reasons ) in Micarta , you can discuss a range of colors , and even bead blast the handle . His Natives are very unique .
