Aloha Vincent,

Cool my man...glad we're on the same page regarding the Grip and Ritter...they are really amazing knives. And Vincent...

Hey dedguy,

I have handled everything from the Kershaw chives to the Boa...even the new Mini Boa. Pretty much all of their line is very well made. However...

Have ya checked out the Leatherman knives? NOT their pocket tools, but their knives? They may have some things you are looking for. Now, whadaya think about my comment on your art? :p

Yeah David, I have a blue Kershaw Bump that I like but the knife doesn't have a safety lock (to hold the knife closed) like the G10 Leek S30V or the Rainbow anodized Chive I got as a gift....I only started trying out the Kershaws after I got a Spyker (which I like better than any of my Kershaws) and after a friend who is a chef showed me his Kershaw Shun kitchen knives.....then I have a Two Can which I a cool keychain tool (can use a single Wharnecliff blade or open out both blades to use as scissors)....
I've often thought about the Nakamura....but I have resisted in pulling the trigger on this one....
I have a Benchmade PE Black coated Gravitator which is a very good knife as I admire Snody's work....but I still prefer my Yojimbo over the Gravitator..I have a Pacific Cutlery Balisong (I believe this company later might have become Benchmade) which was my 1st balisong....this led to the Rainbow Spyderfly and (like everyone) I'm waiting on the fabled Szabofly to reach the stores...
I bought an Ontario Retribution 2 recently after I saw some pictures on this forum....impressive construction / quality (made by Fox Cutlery? in Italy) but the cool recurve blade did not come close out of the box to the Spyderco Scary Sharp standard that I expected....so I had to run it throught the Sharpmaker whites a few times and now I guess I'm happy with its edge...If I had to choose between it and my Manix.....I'd easily choose the Manix!
Today I received an Al Mar Mini Sere and I am very impressed with this knife ....I feel its quality is on par with Spydercos but the price is a tad inflated...
Then I have a CS Spike tanto which is pretty cool ....awesome securex sheath, Scary Sharp out of the box and it's got a very thick spine....an impressive piece for 25 USD!
I've got a coupla Swiss Army Knives as well...
I recently acquired a Lone Wolf T1 Harsey Folder with carbon fiber scales/ S30 V steel.....I like the design and blade a lot but the CF scales had multiple surface blems (esp around the screws in the handle).....but all in all I like the knife...very light and strong...
But the majority of my collection is Spydercos (probably at the 75+ mark) and Byrds....the G10 Cara Cara, G10 Meadowlark, and Robin are my faves to date.... :)
Oh yeah I'm about to buy a Boker Subcom Aus8 Folder! ;) and I'm eyeing the Graham Brothers Pocket Kukhri and Tactical Wharnecliffe....as a possible 1st "custom" purchase.... Oh yeah I've got a Leatherman Wave which I love...and I had a Micra which is also a cool piece....until my friend ruined it using it to break into his own house after getting locked out without the key! :o

Hey dedguy, I give the Two Can the big thumbs up! the wharnie blade on it has some micro serrations on it and the other blade that opens out (to make scissors) is a plain edge blade.....it weighs next to nothing and the scissors are as reliable as the venerable Swiss Army Knives....I like the TwoCan's scissors much more than the Leatherman Micra's ;)

Here's a list of the few brands I've handled/owned/etc and my feelings on them, in no particular order. Can't really say how they compare to Spydercos, because most are aimed at different markets.

Benchmade- Makes great knives, but to me they all seem to look the same. They're too "tactical" for my taste. Their Balis are top notch, though I wish they'd use a different handle style once in a while(the 32 was a breath of fresh air) A little overpriced for me, and I don't like the price fixing they utilize.

Blackjack- I'm one of the few who actually likes Blackjack's knives, I had an old Stalker that was beat to **** and back when I was younger, than it went through a saltwater corrosion test(did remarkably well), so I've had good experiences with Blackjack.

Boker- SUBCOM notwithstanding(we all know how good they are) Boker has some really good stuff, but you'll have to look carefully for the deals. Their high end stuff can get pricey real quickly.

Bradley- I disagree with the "Sebenza ripoff" opinion, but that's probably because I've only bought the Mayhem(Bali). Very pleased with the construction of that one. If the rest of the line is as good, it'll be a great manufacturer.

Chris Reeve- Haven't gotten one yet, they're so expensive they need to be a "goal" purchase, and most of my purchases are on impulse. Can't comment.

Cold Steel:- All across the board, for them it really depends on what you buy. I've bought three of the same knife with mixed results. Some were exceptional, some were rejects. Good Cold Steel is excellent, on par with most other production companies, but when it's bad Cold Steel, it's deserving of the reputation. Inconsistency is my only complaint with them. I do wonder how they come up with some of their prices though.

CRKT- Not my style of knives, but they are well built, and great value for what they cost. I think their low end stuff is better than the high end, simply because of price point. The high end CRKT is priced around the same as other companies. For low cost stuff though, they're excellent.

Emerson- Haven't handled any, because they're all liner locks, and getting a left handed version involves extra money and a long wait. Both things I'm not willing to do.

Kershaw- I like Kershaw(wish they'd make a Bali). They have a good product mix of low and high end items. They've even got a decent ambi lock(extra points in my book). Decent prices, and great quality in my experience. They're quite durable as well, I've sharpened quite a few Kershaws for coworkers, and I'm shocked at how well most of them hold up to the abuse they're put through. My only complaint is that most of the blades look the same to my untrained eyes. Probably number 2 or 3 on my list of favorites.

Microtech- Superb knives, superior fit and finish, and one of the only companies whose out of the box sharpness rivals Spyderco. Downside is they are freakishly expensive, and way too rich for my wallet. I've only owned one, and it cost me an arm and a leg to get, and was eventually sold to raise money.

Ontario- I've had one bad experience with them, with a knife that came duller than my fingernail, and the sheath fell apart on me. I've heard mostly good things about them, and they're great value.

SOG- While they may not use the latest steel(AUS-6 on most) they do make solid knives, and they are quite sharp(Desert Dagger I used to have was the sharpest knife I've ever owned)

Strider- Haven't handled one of these either, never have the money, and the lock is on the wrong side. I doubt there will be any left handed Striders in the near future.

I can go on into semi-custom manufacturers as well ;)

just going based on looks i'd say Kershaw looks like they're my favorite outside of Spyderco even if they suffer from the same problem it seems almost everyone except Spyderco does... all thier product looks the same... well CRKT tend to be pretty driverse in appearance but a bit too... kitchy for my tastes.

Although the very most of my knives are spydies, I have a couple Kershaws and CRKTs. Both are very neat made and perform OK. EDC them? Of course, not, this is what Spydies are made for :)

Of the 10 factory knives I own (minus slip joints) 8 are Spyderco, one Kershaw Ricochet and one Cold Steel Voyager I got at a yard sale NIB for $5. To be honest I bought the CS ( 4" clip point, serrated), because I wanted to test it against my Endura 1 SE..... needless to say the Endura won hands down. As far as customs go, Elishewitz and Anso are my favorite makers.

Well, for my "non-Spyderco" knives, there are only a few I really bother with or enjoy anywhere close to the level of my Spydies.

Probably my favorite of them would be my BM 350 Pardue. It's super slim in both the pcoket and the blade, and weighs next to nothing. I can flick that thing open so easily, and I like the blade shape a great deal. Still, I used to carry it more than I do now, but at one time it was my EDC. Saved wear and tear on a Spydie for a bit!

Other than that, I have a BM Pardue 720 first run which was also carried a lot when I first got it. Shows some wear on the finish, but a nice HD knife. Sorta chunky.

I have a few CRKT models that I like, although they are nowhere near the level of a Spyderco in my book. I am not a fan of a chisel grind, so the M16 series just lounges in my case. The Wasp is a nice, affordable Viele design, with unique AUS118 steel- that sucker is SHARP! Cool blue/ black grips too. a Walker Bladelock2, a few others...

I also have a few SOG knives, the Flash II being the best of them. Nice edge geometry, quick opening, but again- not one that sees much pocket time at all.

I also have 1 Emerson CQC7 Spear point from '99- Heavy Duty, to be sure, but the fit and finish just isn't there. Also, a few Kershaws, the best of those being a Mini-Task, which is an older model with a smaller Wharncliffe blade and polished G-10 which looks CF-ish... Nice for the money! But overall, the Kershaws just lack a bit for fine tuning. Their new stuff is "interesting"...

A few odds and ends, really, but I know better now. I've had most of these non-Spydies for at least 4 years or longer, before I went 100% Spyderco.

Fallkniven makes good knives, so does EKA (nice small folders with wood, thin blades also). Still like :spyder: the best though.

Yup - there's a lot out there :) I have a fair amount in my collection/accumulation (100+ folders). Couple of comments from my collection:

Spydies - of course :D Definitely keeping my interest up constantly with their new stuff. It would be nice if the Canadian market place would get some of the new models - my collection in this area would grow much faster. But then, do I REALLY need 5 Delica 4's? Sure, why not :)

Byrds - I only have a couple at this point, but excellent value for the money. I'm amazed with my Crow and what I've done to it and it still lives. My SS Meadowlark is not mine anymore - it's in my wife's purse (you know - what her's is her's and what's mine is her's :D ). The justifciation is now in place to get the G-10 one :D

Benchmade - I have Grips(Griptillians) and a couple of Red Class ones (Mini Ambush/Mini-Pika) - Grips are worth the money - I found that the Mini-Ambush was a good buy, but not fond of the Mini-Pika ergos. A Mini-Grip and Delica, though, are always with me. I was looking for a tanto tip to try and final decision was a Mini-Grip from all the others.

Buck - I like my Bucks - I have about 20 different models here - again - ones like the 110/112 are classics and just plain good value. One that I was a little disappointed with was the CutBack, which is a Mayo collab - I can't get the pivot adjusted to where I like - if I get rid of the side to side blade play, it's too tight, loosen it, I get blade play. I have a Northshore, though, and it's gorgeous!!!!

Camillus - I'm a big Darrel Ralph fan, and this was the only way I could really afford to get a his stuff (well, maybe if I didn't buy so much other stuff :p ) I have the EDC, a Heat and a Blaze. For the Heat and the Blaze, I paid a premium up here when the exchance was stupid, but they are worth every nickel to me. As a side note - I have more than a few of his kits from knifekits.

CRKT - I feel they represent excellent value for the money - I have more than a few. They have good variety with their collabs. I'm pretty picky here though - I've been caught off guard a couple of times more in the size dept than anything. i.e. Montana Gentleman was much smaller than I thought, Lake PAL (closest I'lll ever get to a Ron Lake!!) was much larger than I thought. I do own the PAL, though. M-1 is built like a tank and M-16-03K has seen a lot of pocket time. These are not the only ones I own, though.

Kershaw - I only have a couple here and they are nice, but they just don't do it for me. Just me, though. In saying that, I did see a Splinter that kinda caught my eye the other week.

Ka-Bar - I only have the Ka-Bar/Dozier folding hunters, but I have 3 of 'em. I carry one IWB all the time, as well, it's one of my "beaters". I've been trying to find a :spyder: replacement, but my SS Meadowlark was just a bit heavy, and the Crow was heavy and wide. Maybe....one of FRN ones...This is about all I have in Ka-Bar - no complaints here.

Ontario - not a lot of experience here, but recently bought a RAT 1 based on some reviews - pretty impressive blade.

Al-Mar - I have only the SERE 2K here and it was probably my expensive purchase and I probably pondered a year before dropping the bucks, but definitely no regrets, despite me not using it. I spent close to $300 CDN for it, so maybe a Sebbie isn't that far away.

SAK - depending on what you do, these are pretty indispensible. I THINK I have at 6 or more kicking around. Again, these are classics and belong in any collection. Finally got around to buying a Soldier and was astounded by the quality and heft of it.

Cold Steel - I bought a Ti-Lite/Zytel "because" one day - I had cash, wanted a new cutting toy. I was actually surprised at the quality of it - it was very well done, all things considered.

This is not all that I have - there are others - but in today's market there are probably better choices out there - Gerber, for instance. I have both a Gator and an EZ-OUT (the older ones), and they get used for yard work, even to this day - it's amazing what they've been thru and they are still ticking. I haven't seen anything from them lately that has caught my eye. I also have a couple of Grohman's - they are "sleepers". I have one of the fixed blades, but I also have a folder called the Featherlite. Riveted pivot, about a 2.5 in. blade, but it's flat ground, thin and cuts like crazy. It was a bit expensive compared to today's standard, but still a good buy.

Depending - this is just the tip of iceberg. There a bunch out there :D

Hope this helps - gord

Well, I've been thinking about a Benchmade fixed-blade Griptilian... I love my Mini-Grips...

I like my custom knives. I have 2 Rick Hinderer's, a Patrick Nihiser, a Peter Atwood, a John Greco, and a Custom Ranger (RD 4). I am also a huge Chris Reeves fan as well. I have a large regular Sebbie, a small Classic, a Bocote wood Mnanadi, and a blue circles Umfaan.

Don't forget the Boye knives.

The handles are zytel (?), but the blades are that niffty dendretic stuff (why the cost so much).

Not that anyone has bought a knife just for the blade metal :D
