I'm sorry, I don't understand. You are talking strange and foreign. :Ddedguy wrote:anything out there that's really worthwild outside spyderco? pretty all my knives are spyderco and i'd like to expand my collection a bit into other brands. Seriously, there is so much out there that if I was to step into unfamiliar waters, I would go look until I found something I fancied. Then maybe hit two or three knife forums and do a quick search for opinions and maybe go from there.
Follow the mushin, but pay it no heed.

DG,
Chris Reeve makes really nice knives, both folders and fixed blades. The sebenza (large or small) are quality folders that are tough to beat. Fit & finsh are top notch. The Project 1 fixed 7.5 " blade is cut from a single piece of A2 steel and is heavy enough for almost any chopping digging, or cutting chores you'll ever come across. Another knife that deserves to be in any collection are any of the fine fixed blades built by Gene Ingram.
Good luck and I hope you decide to check these out. You won't be disappointed.

Al Mar
Hey Ded,
I would check out Al Mar knives...from my understanding, the quality is great! And some nice designs...pretty simple. :)
OR, if $ is not a prob...check out Extrema Ratio...very cool designs and very hardcore knives.
Hope this helps...just my $.02!

Al Mar- is great
Emerson-Decent maybe half as good as spyderco I only like the higher end models. The lower end Liner locks arent to great IMO.
Benchmade-Horrid, everybody knows my stance.
Gerber-Decent but still kinda crappy
Buck-Better but still lacking in areas,
surefire Knives-Crap, Crap, Crap
Microtech- Swell, but I dont think there better,.
Kershaw- I think they are right up there, very high build quality.
extrema ratio-Very nice but pretty expensive and mall ninja-ish
CRK-Great knives but not worth the price.
All in all the only companies Ive handled that can even even compare are Al mar and kershaw.

Strider is excellent, though generally pricey. Strengthwise, they're hard to beat. They're used by many military units, including Marine MARSOC Det.1.
Ontario Knives (RAT series and TAK) are excellent, inexpensive, and very durable. Serious knives for survival, these are amazing values that are tough to beat.
Emerson has excellent knives, mostly folders. Many of their knives are used by real-world operators in nasty places.

Spyderco has earned the respect they get
Sorry but I respectfully disagree on some of your assessments. I was at the Surefire booth at the BLADE show and I got to see 4 knives all together that they have either already brought to market or are going to launch. Surefire's cutlery is great quality. Their handles and materials are superb. I do agree with you on AL MAR but I think they are a bit slow to keep up with the times with blade steels. But then again no production company does that better than Spyderco.Vincent wrote:Al Mar- is great

Now the Benchmade knives I own are very good quality. They are tied at #2 IMO. I have them and Al Mar slightly below Spyderco. Now I think Kershaw is better than they used to be but I don't think they're any better quality wise than BUCK. Microtech is great quality but their prices are just not justified
Spyderco is #1 in my book period. Their blade steel selections and progression is the best. Their construction quality is the envy of the entire industry.

I was going to put in a good word for Boker, but JD beat me to it. They make a good selection of knives. I don't own any Al Mars, but I have never heard anything negative about them. Benchmade is a good company, I just never carry them over Spyderco. It also depends on what you want to use your knives for. If you are going to live in the bush for a year, buy an Emerson or an Extrema Ratio. If you just want a good knife at a reasonable price that will cut lots of stuff well, then you may have a hard time beating Spyderco.JD Spydo wrote: I think there is one company that deserved honorable mention and I think their higher end line is very nice and that is BOKER.
*Edit* I just read your entire post. Bladetech has recieved great reviews, and their designs are not too far off from some familiar knives.
Ask me where I got my awesome SUPERHAWK!

well i'm not looking to "beat" spyderco by any means, just looking for some other quality knife manufacters to buy a few things from for varieties sake. my first knife was a Spyderco and i've never really owned any "real" knives other than Spyderco. i'd just like to try some others out. i think i may order a Kershaw E.T.

Good choice. :)dedguy wrote:...i think i may order a Kershaw E.T.
They are cool. Some folks don't like 'em because they think they are just novelty knives. After you hold one and use it you'll see it's a nice knife. The blade is a great shape too. :)

Aloha dedguy,
Hmmmmm, the Byrd line is killer, and I swear...by fit and finish, not feeling the CometHole, I would swear I was holding an SS Spyder. AT least the ones I have handled anyway.
My SF is VERY well put together...amazingly. :D I gotta agree with JDSpydo that the higher end Boker line is very well made. I have a Ti Stellar and an EFD to attest to my statement. Sometimes I carry a HK drop point folder made outta bead blasted X15. A great piece!
Emerson is good too, I got a Raven from a knifebrother back in the day and it is excellent, even by today's standards. The OLD Cold Steel knives are good too, and I still have an old Voyager SE Tanto that has seen and touched the worst kind of cr*p in **** during shakedowns as well as taking the worst during my night diving days. Sure, it's missing a few of the fine teeth, but great quality.
BM...oh man, Vincent is gonna hate me for this, but I had a bunch of their older stuff...I had the first run of Elishawitz's Stryker in ATS34. My current fave is their Griptillian by my friend Mr. Pardue.
Another company that makes some pretty decent stuff is CRKT. I have a Nealy Pesh Kabz folder that is just incredible in terms of fit and finish. I got it as a gift from Rod Bremmer, so it lives in my GawkBox.
Bottom line is, if you find something you like, get it! However, as Sal says, the customer will always gravitate towards the better performing product...hence you start at the beginning again with Spyderco! :D
I also would recommend Chris Reeve's Knives, and I have handled a few Striders...just cannot afford those guys! :o
God bless and take care buddy

Ive only handled Kershaws, and from what Ive used they were really great. Much better than BM in tersm of Overal quality. Only One benchmade I think is good and thats the griptilian. I actually love this knife, but think the rest of BM line is strides behind kershaw and Spyderco.JD Spydo wrote:Sorry but I respectfully disagree on some of your assessments. I have only handled one surefire and I dont know why they think they are charging $400 for a knife. I say that CRK and striders are very overpriced, but to even put a knife from a flashlight company at the same price to me seems like a punch in the face to other knife makers such as CRK
, strider and even Carrillo and of corse many other true knife makers. I know they are made by ryan but just dont see his work as even comparable and especially to but a flashlight companies name on them. I have not in real life or on any forums met somebody who actually owns one of these.

I dont hate ya, I actually made all of those clims about BM before I even handled a Griptilian at a store, I also handled many other models and the griptilian was lightyears ahead of anything else that BM made. The Axis lock on the griptilian has never failed, thogh has on there flagship models. This is somthing I dont understand but I consider the BM Griptilian and Ritter grips to be the only true knives that BM really makes that are great. sure I havent used them all, but il just go with what I know.
how's the Kershaw Twocan? is the knife decent enough of it's own? i often find myself needing scissors and with the carabanger on it, it looks wicked handy.
