My pimped Byrd Crossbill !
I modified my Byrd Crossbill to suit my needs and as a try out.
I waved the blade, it's very functional both in quickdraw and slow. I also dimpled the lefthand scale to enhance grip and thransferred to tip up.
Opening is very smooth, bot with the wave as with the thumbhole.
What do you guys think?

That does look like the blade is weakened, but I don't know how else you could wave it.
Is it possible to get a closer look at that dimpling? Also, how did you do it?

First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

The blade looks weak, but that's how the comet shaped thumbhole is made. I don't know how i could have waved it without more loss of blade. I had to choose between having a large enough wave, and strenght of the blade.
I could have made the wave smaller, but it would have caused less reliabilty and the same weakness in the blade. Once you "wave" one of these knives, only the amount of blade steel between the comet hole and the cutting edge is left.
Because metal always breaks at the weakest link, it didn't make any difference how i made the wave. So i opted for reliability.
The dimples i made with a hardened steel punch, it was just a excersise to see if i was do able to punch a LOT of small holes in the handle, and to see if it enhanced grippage. It does enhance very wel, about the resistance of blue G10. I am very pleased with the functional side of it.I do have to add more dimples in the middle of the handle.

Very cool  , mind telling me how you did it? I'm not very good at customizing my own knives, but I might try it with a Byrd due to the prices. :D :spyder:

I just used a rotating disk cutter to cut the wave of , and then a round file to give the wave his final form. It didn't took me long to do it. Then i used the steel punch and punch each hole individualy with a hammer. Then i adjusted the tension of the two scales to make it flip open again easely.
Now this was a try out. I will do the stippling with a carbide Dremel needlepoint next time ( it won't cause stuctural tension, and you can make dimples and snakelike criss cross patterns on the handlewithout pounding it with a hammer).
Thx for the nice comments! :)

That's a very cool looking knife you made there Jim, congratulations and thanks for sharing. The blade is probably weaker now, but I don't think this is a problem, as long as you use the knife (strictly) for cutting.

i find it depends on the knife, on the dodo it works great, on the Native it pretty much dosn't work at all.zenheretic wrote:I find the zip tie method unreliable.
