What, did someone switch the blade steel to ZDP189 while I wasn't looking?

WTH, people? When I bought mine, it was right when they were beginning to be a big hot item, and I caught some dude with a mistakenly low price of something like $90 or $95. I knew at the time that from most other sources, the knife was going for about $105.

What the **** is the justification for the ParaMilitary selling for no less than $115 now, and I saw some "buy it nows" for $140!!

This is just ridiculous. Is the knife in limited production? Are people in a frenzy because of some rumor of it stopping production? Has Spyderco stopped producing the ParaMilitary??

I want another one as a backup for the one I just started carrying... but **** if I agree it's a $125 knife!

Let 'em rust on the shelves, for that much. I'm pissed off, now.

Spyderco site shows the current MSRP as $180, so even $140 is a fairly decent discount. Perhaps that MSRP represents a recent increase due to higher material cost, labor cost, or other costs. Lots of things have been going up since energy costs went sky high. Seller is not holding a gun to anyone's head, he's asking a price that you can elect to pay, or not. You certainly have the right to shop around for an even deeper discount, but his price, IMHO is hardly highway robbery. NGK shows them for $113, which acutally seems low considering the MSRP. Perhaps they have had them in stock for a while and got them at a better price.

Just look around, they can be bought for under $100. Just because some place is selling for $140 doesn't mean all of them are $140. I'd look around before freaking out.

I noticed this recently when I was looking at trading a couple knives prices on eBay seem deceptively high compared to the rest of the market, and a lot of cases they seemed being paid. I don't know if this is laziness or people not knowing which sites to trust as well as we do. Egos getting involved in bidding wars. Or possibly special shipping concerns for areas outside the US.

Anything under MSRP is good for me, but there has been a recent trend towards higher prices. I attribute it to the higher prices the ZDP knives are reaching. Gives a sellers a little more guts to try to squeeze the market for a little more profit.

Ebay prices are always out of line.

I have come to realize that people think everything they buy on ebay is a deal. Due to this, people will pay whatever they have to on ebay still thinking it's a deal.

I would just get mine from NGK. They always have nice prices. ;)

Check your BP man! If you don't want to pay the asking price, keep looking. With everything else creeping up to sky-rocketing in price, this shouldn't really be a surprise. Try paying that price then going through the hassle of getting it to where I live. Then you are happy to just pay the asking price :D !

Lately, I stay away from ebay whenever I can help it! There are a lot of rip offs to be found, but occasionaly (very seldom, it seems not like it used to be) a good deal comes through.

Ebay is where I got my 3 ZDP Calys before they exploded. Bought them for $60 something dollars each :D

But with the prices people demand now, I try to stick with NGK

I don't get it - why are you pissed off? Couple of sellers asking 20% below MSRP?

There are numerous other sites and sellers offering it for the going street price of +/- $110. Way more below MSRP. A couple are trying to sell for +/- $135. They're not high-volume sellers on Ebay (50+ and 100+) feedback.
Why wouldn't $140 be a fair price? It's a US made knife, dual steel liners, CPM-S30V steel. Custom made G-10 for Spyderco. What other knives can you get with those specs for such money?

FYI 2 Paras (1 NIB; 1 LNIB) just sold on a knife aficionado site for $100 shipped. If you want good prices you just have to be patient and watch the right sites.

You're kidding, right?

I have long been with the understanding that "MSRP" was a price WELL-ABOVE what a person should expect to pay at retail level. WELL above. So if an item has MSRP of say, $180, I would not expect to pay even $150 for it.

And the "seller squeezing the market" is exactly the kind of greedy over-reach that I object to. What the **** is wrong with being satisfied with what is reasonable?

And David, I USED to see very reasonable deals on eBay. That was before eBay became just another place for retailers to sell their retail stock. Have you seen just how many "auctions" are now simply "buy it now" SALES?

[quote="Patriot"]FYI 2 Paras (1 NIB]

Are you saying that a NEW one AND a used one were sold for a COMBINED $100?

Okay, I was not looking for / hoping for that great of a deal -- just a reasonable price somewhere in line with what they cost when they were a hot new release. I simply don't think $140 is reasonable, not when anyone anywhere can sell them for $105-110. I think that everyone is on this preposterous high, lately, of charging absurd prices for just about anything!

Yes, that's exactly what I was saying. I apologize if at first I was unclear. [I try to word posts directly relating to knife sales delicately to avoid misunderstandings.] Anyhow, although *obviously* we can't expect deals like that to pop up every day, the moral of my post was that there are still plenty of deals to be found if you're patient, lucky, and look hard enough.

Best,
-Patriot

Yeah, well, the thrust of my complaint is that I don't think the general state of things is that the good, reasonable prices should be utter flukes and the conventional avenues are charging an arm and a leg for ordinary, non-scarce production knives!

Please, it's very disingenuous for people to suggest that paying anything below "MSRP" is reasonable. NOTHING sells at retail for MSRP unless it's some ridiculous hot-ticket fad item, like when the Mazda Miata sold for a few thousand over list. Those buyers were just idiots of the irrational, "I-must-have-this-at-any-cost" variety.

I work in newspaper advertising. Every day, I see ads that say, "40-50% off MSRP!" and then in fine print it says, "We never sell at MSRP." Literally, that's how the ads read. What it means is their b.s. "40-50% off" is chicanery: it's 40-50% off a price they never actually sold the stuff for.
MSRP is a joke, and not a realistic guide for telling when you're getting a good deal.

Hey Peacefuljeffrey, When the ATR TI came out I was a little hesitant  at ave price of $175..Then I read a post between you and Sal on BF just by accident. Lucky for me ..because based on Sals' post I realized how much work went into each knife compared to many Custom $400 knives I had held and bought 1. I probably like it as much as you like the PM knife so I bought another as a backup. I did catch heat from a buddy who often pays over $150 for the Emerson's he collects. I laughed my *** off as I think its well worth $25 more than any liner lock..and now they are very hard to find as they didnt rot on shelves. The high buy now prices are for people who just want to buy the item quickly with no hassle or waiting to bid..but many deals are found..just check the :spyder: post..or list a post for a good price on the :spyder: knife you want and most guys will help you find a reasonable deal! This is a :) friendly forum!

Jeff, if you don't want to pay the price, don't. Plenty of knives and merchandise sell for MSRP. That's life.
