Help....Rust!!

#1

Post by jlfletc »

I went lobster diving the other night, and decided to take my new Snap-It with me. Wouldn't you know it, but I forgot to rinse my knife afterwards. The next morning I looked at it, and of course, there was rust. What is the best method to remove the rust on the surface of the blade, and also ensure that it's gone from down in the hinge and locking mechanism?

"If surface rust appears, buff the steel with a metal-polishing compound before the steel becomes pitted. Rinse salt water away with fresh water, dry your knife completely and apply a light coat of oil or silicone to all steel parts as soon as possible."

Taken directly from the Care and Warranty sheet that came with my Dragonly. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Since it's new I assume your warranty is in place, which lasts for one year, I don't know if it rust would be covered though because rust could be classified as misuse by not cleaning it properly afterwards.

Anyways good luck getting it back to normal. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Use a quality gun polish and finish with a chrome polish. Always use Marine Sentry Tuf Cloth to protect.

I seriously doubt that rust would be covered under any warranty. This is abuse under almost any definition. Sounds like you did learn one important lesson though... always take care of your equipment immediately when you are done using it.

Don't mean to sound harsh though, I have had knives rust on me before because I was too stupid to heed my own advise.

To remove rust, I find usually Rem-Oil will work if it's not been on there long. Just spray some on and leave it for a minute or so, then wipe down the blade and it will take care of most of it. The other thing is a metal polish like Flitz or anything similar. These will take off rust that has been there a bit longer.
