Choose, C05GP Standard G-10, Calypso Jr. or Delica

#1

Post by Michael »

I have read most of the forum topics and no one hardly ever mentions the C05GP Standard with G-10 handle. Infact Spyderco's own website doesn't even show that model in their online catalog and neither do other Spyderco dealers.

What do you think about the Standard? Is there a reason this model seems to be so left out? Is it still being made.

I saw the Standard at a local knife store and was thinking about buying it. I also was looking at buying either the Calypso Jr. or the Delica if I didn't buy the Standard. It will be my first Spyderco and I will be using it as an everyday carry. What is your order of preference for the 3 knives and why?

Also regarding a 50/50 edge or plain edge, what factors should I take into consideration in choosing one or the other. I am leaning towards plain edge because I am use to it.

I am hoping Sal and all you experienced Spyderco users could help me make an informed decision.

Thanks,

Michael

Since I don´t own the Standard, I´ll left it out. As choosing between the other two. Hmm. Tough choice. I have both and although they are almost identical in size and measurements, there is still a big diff. between them. I like the blade material (VG-10) of the Calypso better. Also the blade shape, being flat ground and drop pointed is IMO a better choice of those two. However, the Delica is more comfortable in my hand due to a slightly bigger handle. Then there is the clip placement question. Some people like tip down carry and some tip up. I feel more comfortable with the tip up carry as on the Delica. The ATS-55 steel of the Delica is almost as good as the VG-10 of the Calypso. But I´ve found that I am able to put much better an edge on the Calypso. As I said, tough choice...It all depends on your own preferences.

We stopped making the G10 Standard some time ago and we didn't make a great amount of them. It is an excellent piece, but also difficult to find. usually worth far more than the asking price (at this time).

the Delica & Calypso each offer their own features as dePaul suggests.
