How do you open your Spydie?

How do you open your Spydie?

Playing with your Spydies aside, what's your preferred method of opening? Assuming you need to actually remove from carry and cut something.

Spydie drop
Ziptie wave
SpyderHole
Flick
Other?

I've noticed that I tend to fall back on the good 'ol SpydieHole lately where I can get a quality flick into full lock-up every time. But some of it seems to be a little model dependent with some working best with a regular flick (no touch of hole), others with the hole, etc.

*edit* Trying to post this in poll form but can't seem to. *edit*

Playing with the ziptie wave mod was fun for a bit. Drawing straight from pocket was faster there yes, but I'm becoming of the mindset more and more that being aware of your surroundings and concealing the closed folder in hand is probably a better bet.

For utility it obviously doesn't matter much and becomes purely preference (and I find myself gravitating towards the hole in those cases). But I'm of the opinion that habit tends to kick in in a high stress scenario and you fall back on what you're used to.

But hey, I'm definately a relative newcomer to Spydies especially compared to a lot of the vets on here.

I usually just use the hole. I sometimes flick a knife open just because I can.
On waved models I will use the wave most of the times and often just for the fun of it. I only use the drop on models I can not open safely using the hole like the Kiwi.

Actually on a couple of my Spydies I prefer a two handed open...these three being the SS Police, G10 Police and Civilian...I don't know maybe having both hands up and ready is a natural MBC, SD thing.

For me it's the 'boring' regular thumb opening using the hole. Spydiedrops are for 'play' only for me.

I use the SpyderHole probably 99% of the time or more and do even that very slowly when in the presence of the terminally timid. Occasional "Spydie Drop" with my Stretch or Persian when alone and bored.

Any mod you do to your knife simply makes it makes the police notice it more.... and question why you did such a thing. In regards to quick, sure opening, I think extracting the folder, using it as an impact tool or concealed as necessary, then opening normally works.... or if you must open as quickly as possible, two hands.....
I dislike Spydie-drops (New York drops?), although they certainly are more secure with the Spydie-hole.

I use the hole with thumb for all of my knives, but at times on the Para Military I "flick" it open and closed.

Over at another forum, one user told the story of a friend of his who was standing on the corner, waiting for the light to change, when 2 cops approached him from behind. One of them reached into the guy's back pocket and pulled out his Gerber E-Z Out. (He was carrying it as work knife). They told him they thought his folder was a gravity knife. And to prove it, they decided to try some inertia openings (Drop openings). Let's set aside the fact that's not how a real gravity knife works. The 2 cops literally stood there on the corner, for several minutes, both of them trying to get the blade to open using only inertia. After a ridiculous amount of attemps, the blade opened; and the guy got arrested for carrying an illegal gravity knife in NYC. His lawyer advised him to plead guilty and pay the fine; less of a hassle that way..... I have respect for some LEOs. But what those 2 pulled was just B.S. (I wouldn't be surprised if they each had a similar "gravity knife" clipped to their pockets). But each arrest and guilty plea definitely makes their personel-files look good.

As for me, I prefer to use the hole. The one thing I've always liked about Spyderco knives, if I find a model I like, I know the hole was made "right." I can't even begin to describe the number of thumb-stud equipped folders that I initially wanted, but turned down after handling them because the thumb-studs would literally raise blisters or even peel skin off my thumb!

Just 2 days ago, I had the same experience again! With a thumb-stud equipped folder, even an expensive one, your chances are 50 / 50 that the thumb-stud won't raise blisters! With a Spyderco knife, you know that hole is going to be comfortable, for your thumb! Thank You Sal, for keeping the blisters away! :)

Hole, or drop when I feel like playing. I can't manage a flick with my Delica II, maybe the Tuf-Glide I ordered will help. But it's not important to me.

The hole. That's why Sal put it there ;)

Flicks and Spyder drops are for showing off, but other than that, they don't have any legitimate use in book.

God bless
