Can Almite be tooled or filed?

#1

Post by seth »

I'd like to tool or file the Almite handles on my Ayoob. Does anyone know how well Almite will take to tooling?

Know any cutomizer that does this kind of work?

TIA,

Seth

Don't know about the Almite coating itself, but Aluminum is under it.

If you take a Dremel to almite, it takes customization pretty well. I've done my Cricket(Tufram) and it's great. Since almite is also just a coating, the theory should be the same.

If you find the thread about custom spydies, you'll find the pics of it.

I found my Ayoob folder to be alittle more slippery than I like, so I covered the non-clip side with "Agrip", and that seems to work very well.

The Ayoob is a great knife, but it should be updated with some G10 scales IMO.
Almite is just a coating for those aluminium scales. ALuminium can be easily tooled but for the coating... I don't know how hard it is.

Hi Seth,

I've not seen anyone engrave an Ayoob but several Spyderco employees here have laser engraved webs over the green or gray Almite handles on our Lum Chinese folder. Looks awesome- the natural color of the aluminum shows through the thin engraving lines. As for how if might influence the wear and resistance of the handle underneath, I haven't heard any comments.

Joyce - I was thinking of having my Blue Lum engraved. Is this something that was done through Linda? By Spyderco? Or some other place. Would appreciate any advice you have.
