Well I wanted a spyderco so I just (4/13/01)went to the Spyderco hope page and ordered a Native plain edge.Saw the forum sight and thought I could learn something well I learned something bad. I could have gotten the knife for $59.00 instead of 89.00.

I would by no means call it ripped off. Spyderco has an MSRP set on all their knives that most brick and mortar retailers need to go by to turn a decent profit. Internet dealers can offer lower prices because of lower overhead and higher volume sales. Spyderco must sell knives off their website at MSRP or risk upsetting the brick and mortar dealers that sell their knives at MSRP. It is a simple matter of if the company undersells their retailers, then the retailers quit selling their product.

I know several dealers in my area that have quit selling another companies knives because the company mails all it's customers that send in the card with their knives a catalog that undersells the dealer. Then they get upset about paying him a higher price in the first place and everybody comes off feeling bad about this company.

No offense meant, but I'm gonna say the fault on this one was yours for not doing a little research ahead of time. At least you are better informed now and know where to buy from in the future.

I agree with you completely.
But I will return the knife to spyderco for a refund or I will not pay (Credit Card)or they can sell it to me for the lower price!!

I have a habit of not minding my own business, so I'm going to chime in here. Asking for a refund or a lower selling price is a reasonable thing to do. But to cancel the credit card charge after the knife has been shipped? That's theft, even if you feel you paid too much. If you don't get what you ask for with Spyderco, listen to your conscience: do the right thing. Chalk it up to experience.

Am I the only one smoking cloves here?

Hi Mark. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

I'm sorry that you are disappointed. However, the Native is worth every penny of the MSRP that you paid. Our knifemakers here in Golden have built that for you with skill and caring.

Perhaps you could have found it cheaper.

However;

1. Spyderco does pay for shipping.
2. You are dealing direct, so we know our own products far better than anyone.
3. We do provide an on line catalog and useful knife info at no charge.
4. We do support our authorized dealers by providing addresses and maps to their locations. (There is also nothing wrong with supporting your own knife dealers. (Price isn't everything).
5. We provide a toll free telephone communication and email support.
6. We repair our own products.
7. We carry "retired" models while inventory lasts for your convenience.
8. We moderate our own forum and communicate directly with our ELUs. (at least as well or better than any other factory).

Gail adds (my wife); Whether you purchase our products from us or a dealer, we're grateful that you chose Spyderco and we will continue to do the "right stuff for the right reasons".

Tique, Celticway, thanx for chiming in. At Spyderco, we feel that we are a different kind of "knife company", at the core. We appreciate your understanding and support.

In the end, the amount of money that you spend on a Spyderco won't be as important at the effort, skill and caring that goes into the product.

Mark 1955 I'd have to agree with Celticway. Do better home work next time. Don't feel
bad about the price you paid. You DID get your money's worth. I've made my share
of "learning" OOP's about knives and bought several at too hight a price. You just have to
remember that an "education" in any field cost money and time. Don't let this OOP's
sour you on a very fine company and a great hobby. Your experiance IS part of the fun!

Live and learn. Even at retail price, Spyderco is the best buy out there.

I guess you should look at this from a couple viewpoints. I bought a lot of knives before I was aware of the fact that you could get the same knife at a much better price over the net. I don't feel "cheated" or "pissed" that I payed a higher price. The knives I bought were still quality and worth the price I paid because they worked when I needed them to and I never had a problem with them.

You have to look at the fact you now get them at a lower price as a benefit of knowledge. The main advantage I have by buying knives over the net is it allows me to buy more knives. If I was still buying only a few a year I would probably still deal with my local dealer and not worry about price, but since I buy a good number more than that now, the net saves me a ton of money that I can spend on other knives.

I still pay full price on a knife on occasion. When I do this, it's obviously for a reason, since I can get a signifigant discount on the net. I do it because of the service I get from their store, and therefore my loyalty to their business.

I haven't bought any knives over the net. I pay full price(minus my "frequent shopper" discount) for all my knives. I just finished getting an Almite Cricket for $100. Had I gotten in on the net, I would have spent about $80. Figure in shipping, and it would be the same price. I figure spend what you are able to, and get quality, not quantity. I'm getting my father a knife that is $30+taxes, and buying it for $30(taxes in). I have a knife i bought 2nd hand and just checked about it this week. I could buy the EXACT same knife for $100, rather than the $4 I got it for 3 yrs ago.

I figure support those around you, pay full price, and enjoy.

Hello,
Since my last posting I have decided to keep the native S/S and chalk it up to a lesson well learned. I have not yet recieved it yet.
In the meantime I have ordered three more Spyderco knives (Delica combo edge zytel handle,Calypso Jr. lightweight and a Dragonfly plain edge Zytel.
It's like eating lays potato chips can't stop at just one....<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Mark/1955 you're in for a real treat with the calypso & dragonfly. These two little knives are amazing
cutting tools. I didn't like " one hand flippy, hole in the blade, plastic handled" knives until I bought
a calypso. Carried it for a few day and my stockman hit retirement ...wham! It stays in the drawer now.
Since that time I've bought several other spyderco's for daily carry in rotation. My myerchin ride's with
me for really tought "I might break it " jobs at work , otherwise one (or more) of my spyderco's are in
my pockets. Enjoy!!!!
