Copilot or Navigator

G'day All

Excellent forum!

I'm looking at purchasing one of these small folders, and was wondering what others thought of these two models. I have large hands, so the knife that fits best would be the go. Suggestions for any other models with a not too offensive blade would also be considered. Knife will be a daily carry replacing my Ladybug, which is a great knife, but a bit too small. I used to carry a Buck 110FG which worked well, but attracted too much attention.

If you are interested in something a bit more pricey, you might want to look at the Viele model. I carry it on campus and don't have any problems with it. It looks pretty dressy for the size of it, and it is probably the smoothest knife Spyderco makes. It is right hand only though. Just a thought.

I don't have either of the smaller ones, so I can't say much about them.

I carry a stainless serrated CoPilot all the time.I too have large hands. I think you'll find this one is perfect for you.Fits nicely in the pocket, not too large and great as an all purpose folder.

Where abouts are you? I can't speak for the Copilot but I was recently given an Almite Navigator (actually it was a prize here on the forum <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>). I can't praise it highly enough. The ergonomics are superb, I was surprised how secure the grip is for such a little knife and the fit and finish are excellent. It is my suit knife, (actually I had to go out and buy a suit to go with it <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>, I kid you not) and the knife I carry when I need to be politically correct.

I'm a fan of the Copilot. I like the look of the Navigator and the fact that the choil design allows you to choke up on the blade. But it just doesn't fit me like the Copilot. If you could get to a store and try one on for size may make your decision. Or what the heck, buy both! Never can have too many Spydercos.....

It looks like either knife would be good. Living in Canberra, I'm unable to have a play with either one. I find some tools/gloves/etc to be just a little too small to be a really good fit, so it would be good to try them first. Clay, know of any good knife shops in Sydney?

G'day Bill. If you are able to find a dealer that carries both of these knives (or know people who own them), you should try handling both--preferably side-by-side--before deciding. They both have comfortable grips--in their own way. The Co-pilot seem to fit nicely in the palm area while the Navigator seem to fit nicely in the finger area. The almite Navigator is my personal choice: it's good looking, it's lightweight, and it can get the job done. I hope this helps.

Sorry to have taken a few days to get back to you, but I was waiting to get the address of a shop from my mate Ferret. I don't hang around the shops much as I get all my knives off the net. However Gowings on the corner of George and Market Sts. have the best selection I've seen including a few Spydies. Also Mick Smiths gunshop further down George St. towards Central Railway carry a few nice knives. Ferret told me he saw some Benchmades at the Mitchell King disposal store near the corner of King and York Sts. although I've bever been there myself. The "King of Knives" chain has a few Spydies also but usually the lower end and also very expensive. I did see a Native in one of their shops. Can't say I've ever seen a Copilot or a Navigator in the shops so I guess your just going to have to take your chances <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>.

I'll follow your leads next time I'm in Sydney. You're right about King of Knives, only a few models, and high prices. I'll buy off the net, but would like to try them first. Maybe I'll buy both!

G'day William. Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

I can tell you that the Navigator is a more "refined" design. I designed both models to serve the same function, but my skills as a designer were more experienced when the Navigator was designed.

The Navigator seems to easily fit most hands, even large ones. The shape of the handle permits "grip" from multiple directions.

The Navigator "pattern" will be used to make the "Meerkat" and the "Slip joint" model.

I too have quite large hands (especially for my age) and I was trying to decide whether to buy the copilot or navigator. In the end I ended up ordering the copilot. However, during my search i also considered the VG-10 Mouse knife. You should think about it.
