Folding Chef's Knife

#1

Post by Clay Kesting »

Happy New Year everyone.

I seem to be on a bit of a roll with my wish list. First it was a Wharncliffe bladed Centofante, followed by a bolstered Calypso in ZDP189. Now that the Centofante is a reality and the Calypso is coming (disguised as a lock-back UK Penknife) I reckon it's time to see if I can be third time lucky.

I've posted before about the need for a folding chef's knife in the :spyder: line-up. This is even more important for those of us that spend a lot of time in the kitchen now that the kitchen line has been discontinued. In this thread Kevin Wilkins said that he would like to see :spyder: make a version of his Ryback Folding Chef's Knife . He even has the CAD drawings :) .

Would anyone else be interested or am I out on a limb with this one.

A :spyder: dedicated kitchen folder would be great :)

H1 would seem to be the natural choice for a design like this. I like the sound of "Tactical Chef's Knife" :D

Interesting!
First time I've ever seen a folding Chefs knife (not that i've ever really looked.) That looks like one very well built knife, but out of my price range. I would love yo see something like this in the :spyder: line up!
Let your opponent graze your skin and you smash into his flesh;
Let him smash into your flesh and you fracture his bones;
Let him fracture your bones and you take his life!

Clay

I posted in that other thread, but I'll repeat it here - I think Wilkins "Ryback" design would make a great collaboration. I'm not sure how widespread the interest might be, but I'd buy one!

The knife looks pretty good, I also like AGR´s Folding Santoku/Hocho..
Good idea, you can take your favourite kitchen knife anywhere for travel.

Clay,

maybe you could change the title of this thread to "Folding Chef's Knife" or "Tactical Chef's Knife". That would get more attention.

I don't know how much of a market there would be, but if Spyderco could make a version of Wilkins knife, I would definitely get one.

The affordable version would have FRN handles and a ball lock.
The less affordable version would have CF Peel Ply handles and a ball lock.
Either way, it needs to have open construction.

If AG Russell can keep selling his Hocho - one of the very least comfortable and user friendly folding knives on the planet, then surely, Spyderco can sell enough of these to campers to make it worth their while.

This sounds like a great idea! Many people use their Spyder's for kitchen work anyway, so why not one designed for the task? I guess H1 would be an obvious choice, I'd like to see how it performs in a flat-grind.

Sorry Clay, ;)

If we get a collaboration with this maker, I want one of these:

Clay, you are a troublemaker! :D

Kitchen duty is regular fare for my spydies, even the Kopas! I think :spyder: got pretty close to a folding kitchen knife with the Military and after that the Chinese folder. Just make it thin enough, those 'Ryback' folder look pretty thick.

I'm in!

I should have taken a pic of what my Para did in the kitchen today, I should've had a leash on that thing! I really put a lot of vegetables in their place, I'm the salad guy around here.

If spyderco puts out a kitchen folder, I'll attach a magnet to it. That way it can stay on the fridge, always within reach!
