Buying Spydie as a gift Need Suggestions
Buying Spydie as a gift Need Suggestions
I want to get my father a spydie for his birthday. I want to have the handle engraved with happy birthday from his granddaughters so the handle has to be stainless steel.
He has always carried a pocket knife, but never anything large. I want him to get some use out of it and not just put it away.
Which model should I choose.
Thanks for the help

You can look at ant all steel Spyderco knife. I would like to suggest however, the Aal Steel Rookie (C51) in SpyderEdge or Plain. The knife has recently been discontinued, but schould still be available on the market. You can find a very good review of the knife in the January 2000 issue of Combat Knives. Remember that a knife doenn't have to be hudge and clumsy to work well. An other advantage will be that the smaller knife will be less scary to 'ordinary' folks that do not think knife all the time. I wish you luck and I hope Dad will honor your gesture.

I'm suprised that no one has suggested the the stainless Dragonfly yet. INMO it is the most elegant of the stainless Spydies and would be ideal for your purpose especially as your father is used to carrying smaller knives. I particularly like the flat grind of the blade. Another option would be the Worker which is being discontinued and is destined to become a classic. However it is only available with a serrated edge which may not suit your father. Then there's the stainless Calypso Jr, another very elegant design.

And don't forget the Pegasus. Still out there, but if ya can't find it the Dragonfly in stainless would be my second choice.
Here is a link to a pic of a Pegasus like mine(you'll have to cut&paste)(its at the bottom of the page):

Clay,
I just noticed that the Pegasus is in the discontinued section at SFO at a pretty good price. The handle is only slightly shorter than the Dragonfly and not quite so curved. However I think a good engraver should be able to do something to fit the curve of the Dragonfly.

I myself carry a Delica, it's the perfect size for my uses.
I'm buying my father a Cricket for Fathers day/Birthday... same weekend.
I'm looking at a Co-pilot of something small for my mother.
I'm getting nothing but praise in my inquiry about the Native.
All great little knives. If he was a hunter, I would have suggested either a Millie, a Moran or a Chinook. All knives that look like they could hold up in the field.
I head down to my knife store about every 2weeks. I have probably had each and every spydie in my hands at one time. He even has a Q with the spyder in his display. nice knife but only display. It doesn't look like it would hold up to the kind of abuse my knives get. My delica is still going strong though. Sharpened it for the first time this fall, after using it for 1 yr...
We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

I know it might be considered a little non-conventional looking, but what about a TOAD. I use mine as a money clip, it is small and rock solid, and i have grown to love it alot for what it is. It is a liner-lock, for one hand operation, and has more than enough surface area to have something engraved on the handle. Seriously, take a look at the Spydeco C57P Toad, if you are looking for a small, solid pocket knife to carry. By no means is this a defense knife, but will open any box, cut a packing strap or rope, clean your finger nails, and also carry you drivers license/credit card/and dollar bills.

VampyreWolf,
That site belongs to Mr. Brooks Burt. He does all that and more. I meet him at the 1998 Blade Show. He had 2 Pegasus' engraved and a few other knives. I was planning on buying a Pegasus anyways and the engraved one just called my name!! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> Drop Mr. Burt an email if you are interested in his work.

Clay:I echo harpyslayer's question-?What'd you decide on?
Wolfey:I got my sons' each a bunch of the Q-knives.To date one from each set has"grown legs" but they're quite pleased with them & they are a pretty tough little knife for daily carry(they don't-not the Q's).
Yo Spyderco Guys! If you could bring the Q's back.....!!!*VBG*

earthworm>> do they just use it for daily use, or for camping and such too?
I have used my Delica on AirCadet survival, and it held up, but needed a small sharpening after. I normally take a couple knives camping or on survival. A 4" lockblade(cheap, good for whittling), a 4" skinner(Suko, fixed blade)), and my Delica. Between the set, I don't have anything yet I can't do.
I abuse my 4" lockblade, and my skinner doesn't look much better. I have yet to even scratch my Delica however. Spydies may be tough, but let me abuse one for a weekend, and I'll tell yah how the edge holds up. I sharpen my 4" lockblade every night when on survival. It holds, but gets abused.
