Standing Corrected

#61

Post by Gibsoniam »

re: "Ideally, competition alone would dictate who the best is, not buying out or underhandedly driving out your competition."

I stand corrected. What possessed me to type that? Especially since it contradicts point #2 from my previous post:

2) Wal-Mart is as succesful as they are, at least in part, because PEOPLE WILLINGLY SHOP there.

When I lived in N. Cal there was a community arguing that Wal-Mart would destroy small business, and back then I even said that if they couldn't compete, they would adapt or be driven out. I think when I wrote that phrase up there I was thinking from the perspective of the little guy that does get driven out- "Wal-Mart came after me and drove me out!" when the reality is, as you said Thom, just that "the little guy" was unable to offer a similar service at a similar price. I think maybe a bit of "the other side" of the argument managed to sneak in my brain and find a way out. :D

In regards to any knife dealers living under the shadow of a Walmart, I would see it as a great opportunity. Walmart will sell some knives, regardless if they carry a Spyderco or not. They always have and likely will as long as it helps bring in the masses. Considering that Spyderco won't be able to have their whole line for sale at Walmart (nor would Walmart carry it), it seems like a great time to offer some of that B&M knowledge and availibility. Buy the knife counter folks lunch or otherwise smooze them so that when Johnny Walmart Buyer goes to Walmart to get a different Spyderco model, the guy behind the counter will direct him to your Knife Store.
Follow the mushin, but pay it no heed.

When I went to Wal-mart and looked at the native it was dripping with oil. They must of put it on there because it was ALL over the blade. But they only have PE anyway so I got the native III SE online instead.

Hi Gang,I have two questions.

1.Are the Natives available at Canadian Walmarts,or are there any plans for the future?

2.Do the Natives avalable at WM come with boxes or clampacks?

If this has been addressed, sorry I missed it.

Thanks.

In my area, there aren't any stores selling :spyder: co products. We do have a Walmart in our area. I hope to see the :spyder: co products at Walmart. Not many people know that there is a knife company called Spyderco. So selling at Walmart should help Spyderco a lot. :)

squad314,
As far as we know it is only US stores that are offering the Native. There are currently just over 1400 of them. We are unaware of any plans to expand the offering in to the Canadian market.

The Natives are in our regular slider box.

That is a chunk of knives even if each store only received 5. Nice to hear production capability has been able to be ramped up. I hope the good knifemakers in Golden still have time to make all our other favorites. ;)

Does anyone know what material is used for the clip of the Wal-Native.

I just stripped the paint off of mine and it looks different then the stripped clip from my Delica 3.

Darth Miklos,

Having to drastically change one's lifestyle is rarely fun and, even when it is fun, can often be painful. Your post reminded me of several complaints about freely associating and exchanging values with others that I've heard many times in my youth and even recently. Sorry to use your post as a catalyst for the voices in me head.

Hi Kristi. Thanks for the infos and for the transparency Spyderco keeps on showing. Always a thing or two to think at.
While I'm not familiar with Walmart (how could I, there's no Walmart here), I understand that there will be cheaper Spydies for us and who am I to argue with that? ;)

I don't agree with Spyderco's Dealings with WalMart at all for a number of reasons that You have all heard before. That said I won't turn my back on Spyderco because of it. I have alot of respect for the way Sal interacts and Listens to us his customers and is upfront about everything. I return this by showing everyone I can my spydies. The MeerKat never fails to intrigue when I challenge folks to find the lock release. :)

I never was good with words when typing sorry LOL

guntotin fool,
First, welcome to the forum! We hope you enjoy your time with us.

Next, ask them for #60. That is the number assigned by Wal-Mart for the C41PBK Native.

I finally got to Walmart the other day to see the Native. Excellent workmanship, excellent knife, and fits my hand perfectly. The associate at the knife counter acutally knew there was a :spyder: co Native there which is strange as before :spyder: co started selling the Native no one seemed to know what a :spyder: co knife was at Walmart. I am putting a Native on my "want list" now. :)

I have also been to three Walmarts and, each was out of stock on the Native. Now I am searching the local gun and cutlery stores. In regards to Walmart, it pleases me that they are carrying some nice knives like the Spyderco and Kershaws. I certainly hope this trend continues. In today's competitive global marketplace, Walmart has done an excellent job bringing goods to us at competitive prices. This has had the effect of providing opportunities for suffering third world countries to mitigate their poverty problems.

Walmart runs a top notch business model. The way it is, is the way it is. The people suffering from low wages working at Walmart would be suffering from their wages if Walmart gave them a 20% raise today. Sales assistants and stock clerks positions are not, and never have beeb, a high paying job. People throughout industry are facing cutbacks and changes in healthcare plans so Walmart is not alone in trying to control their cost. If you want good healthcare then get a government or public service job. Private industry in general can not compete with this sector.

If anything, the globalization scene today has opened the doors for many Americans to start their own business and chart their own future. One only needs to look at audio equipment, knives, bicycles, etc to see that today the number of small business owners getting into these businesses has doubled over the last 4-5 years. This is the way it should be. And it's one of the reasons our economy has done so remarkedly well over the past few years.

Hi RNHood,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

Sorry you are having difficulty finding a Native. There should be some out there.

Also, thanx for your views on Wal-Mart. We've had a few "interesting" discussions about Wal-Mart on our forums, since Spyderco began dealing with them last October.
