Where do you carry a self-defense only knife?

#1

Post by stu »

Spyderco forum,

Greetings to all. I hope that this new year finds you doing well.

Sal brought up a good point in an earlier post. He stated that a well-used dull daily carry knife is ineffective for self-defense. Where do you carry a second knife intended solely for self-defense (I do not like multiple knife carriers) and, for those of you who regularly carry more than one knife, have you had any adverse public reaction? Does this reaction seem to be more intense or frequent than those you recieved when carrying only one knife? I would prefer feedback from SpydieNuts with real-life experiences.

Thank you for your time,

You don't like multiple knife carriers?? Why?? If you don't mind my asking. Anyways...
I have carried a few knives for 7 years now. I picked up the habit after reading about Eric Remmens knife training classes. He recommend carrying 2 knives(and being able to deploy both in 2 seconds). Left and right side, one for each hand. In case one arm was trapped you had a backup.
I carry a Delica on my left side, front pocket. I carry an Endura on my right side, rear pocket. My defense only knife is right side, front pocket. Have I ever needed it?? Nope. Will I ever need it?? I hope not. Just like the spare tire, and first aid kit in my car.
If you don't want to carry 2 knives, just sharpen you 1 knife every night when ya get home. A little touch up should only take 5-10 minutes.
I haven't had any problems carrying a "few" knives, but I don't work in a suit(I actually carry more knives to church, more pockets in a suit). Its a choice you have to make that suits your life style and will keep you alive in a emergency. That's all.

Blades,

Thanks for the reply. I like your practical choices for everyday carry. It makes a lot of sense to carry a backup in the left front pocket(a shorter blade on that weak side makes a lot of sense too.) You have inspired me with the challege to access both within 2 seconds.

I have been apprehensive to carry a knife in the back pocket for fear of having it removed unwaringly. How do you anticipate/defend aganinst that?

When I wrote "multiple carriers" I did not mean someone carrying more than one knife, I meant a device strapped onto your body designed to carry more than one knife. My prejudice is purely theoretical as I have never used one.

Take care.

I misunderstood the "multipies". I see what ya mean now.
The practical choices are easy to make. Just have to remember that any knife is a tool, and you have to be willing to lose or break that tool if needs be. I might have to jam a knife in door to keep it from closing(or opening), knowing that it will destroy my knife. But since I can't afford to waste a $300.00 knife I don't carry any. I would think twice about using a $300.00 knife in an emergency, and I might not have time to think twice. So Spyderco is here to save the day.
Eric Remmen was who inspired me to deploy "2 in 2 seconds". I have passed it on to a few people. I doubt I'll ever need to deploy them, but its fun to practice. The real trick is deploy, open, close and return in 2 seconds.
My right rear pocket knife does concern me, but if it is pulled out, I run. Easy enough. If I can't run, then "2 in 2" I suppose. Usually you can't see it. I wear my shirts untucked, when I can. I wear my suit coat in church. The only time it use to be visible was at work. Since the clip broke on my Endura I have a homemade pocket kydex sheath that carries my Endura. I have a small laynard that hangs out of my pocket that I grab to deploy it. It also has my white photon II on the lanyard.
Sorry to ramble on. I'm sure someone else will jump in sooner or later.

Blades,

Thank you for the reply. I like your style. I also like your answer concerning carrying a knife in the back pocket. You have obviously thought this out.

Now your saying I need to "deploy, open, close and return in two seconds." I only just began feeling that deploy and open in two seconds was feasible. Now I have a new goal! I am really intrigued by the idea of accessing TWO knives that quickly.

Take care,

Stu,
Well I don't know how much style I have, but "thanks". Most of it is just common sense, and useful information I've picked up from every where. Books, magazines, videos, and the internet these last few years. Gather what is useful and forget the rest.

I tried carrying my Endura(when it still had a clip) in my waistband. It carried fine, but was too slow for me to deploy(too much belly ). I'm use to reaching for my right front pocket anyways. I have a friend who carries an Endura in his waistband. He is quick on the deploy. Very quick. But he has carried it for a long time.
Ken hit it on the head. Just have a perfectly good reason why ya carry a few knives. Plain edge for this, serrated for that, and one for cutting your sandwich at lunch time. Also if your in a wreck and one arm is trapped you can still reach a knife to cut your seltbelt off. Safety concerns, that's all.

Regarding "multiple carry"
Most people ( civilians ) don't carry multiple knives ; this seems reserved for
police, fire / emergency and military. I carry my "Cricket" with it's diminutive
1 7/8" blade, it has great utility as well
as self defence if necessary. As I have a
fairly large knife collection I could carry
two or more knives, but why add bulk ?

It is a little strange but I get more people asking about my mutitool, I carry it in a pouch on my belt. Than I do about my SS Native with its shinny clip that I carry in my front right pocket. In fact no one has ever asked about my Native II and I don't cover it up!

Ehh, supposed to be Thorin... : )

I carry three with pants and two when I wear shorts. With pants...the Cilvilian inside the pant at the small of the back on the right, the G-10 Police in front right pocket and the Delica in front left pocket. With shorts...the SS Standard on right and the Delica on left

I am also a civilian, and carry only one at time(plus a Spydercard in the agenda)at it mostly depends from the cloth I wear: in T's and jeans I prefer my SS Native in the front right pocket, when with suit the same knife in the waistband, or, as recently, a Cricket on the back of my tie.

I carry a dyad (full size) in the right front pocket, and a shabaria inside waistband in the small of my back. The shabaria is firmly clipped on, so I won't lose it while I am running as fast as I can from any possible confrontation! :-) Not that I wouldn't use it, I would in an instant, (and yes, I can produce it VERY fast) but it's difficult to run and use a knife at the same time! I have always felt there is no problem so large that it can't be moved away from! :-) If I ever find out differently, and I hope I don't... it will be with me. I generally have a jacket or sweater on, which covers the knife in back.
I also carry a multi-tool on my belt, and a micra in the left pocket. Probably use the micra more than anything...

Sorry about the double post... that's what I get for running! :-)

By the way, I should have mentioned that I have always felt part of the best defense is AWARENESS. I taught my wife and children to always be aware of what is happening around them. It has helped avoid several situations that could have been a real problem.
NOW I will shut up.... :-)

Thanks to everyone for replying to my post.

I know that people generally develop their preference for every day carry through a very personal process of trial and error. I appreciate those of you who have taken time to share your results.

Take care,
